I’m a known Jameis Winston non-believer, and I am not going back on that now until he proves he can play. However, a lot is going on in New Orleans that makes guys like me in fantasy start dreaming about Winston’s potential success in the black and gold. Last year was going to be his prove-it year to me, but it was cut short by an injury. Even in those few games he did play, his stats weren’t particularly prolific to be excited about fantasy-wise. But when you don’t have Michael Thomas, that can hurt a lot. There was a lot of hype for Marquez Callaway, but in the end, he was just disappointing.
Now, in 2022, I think there are completely different circumstances for Winston. Some information that might be lost in transition is that he got Lasik eye surgery. It leads one to believe that during his time in Tampa Bay, he might not have been seeing all that clearly — he was often seen squinting his eyes when looking far away. Last season he was able to see clearer, and there were glimpses of better decisions with his small sample size on the Saints. He seems to be completely healthy now and has way more weapons at his disposal than last year.
Let’s get the ugly out of the way first though, we don’t know the situation on Alvin Kamara, whether he is in trouble, and how long for. That is the biggest thing to monitor for the Saints. Depending on the outcome, Kamara can still be helpful to Winston’s fantasy production later in the season — if he plays. The rest of the weapons though? Sheesh. Michael Thomas is the biggest, he’s back. Although some have him nicknamed “Slant Boy” (in all honesty, it’s funny), he is still a fantastic WR. He could have been running slants a lot due to the decline in Drew Brees’ arm strength. We know Jameis Winston has an arm, that could mean BIG things for Thomas.
That’s not all though. The Saints must have known Thomas’ impending return wasn’t enough for the WR room, because they signed Jarvis Landry to a one-year deal this offseason. On top of that, they drafted Chris Olave (Suave Olave), my WR1 — also, can we please get this nickname going, it’s being wasted. That means the top-three WRs in the Saints’ offense are disgusting. It gives New Orleans versatility in the passing game and lets Winston have some success just based on WRs alone. If we’re going to add Kamara to the equation where he can catch out of the backfield, goodnight.
The best part of Jameis Winston’s fantasy outlook is many people feel the same as I do. They don’t believe in him, and I can’t tell you I blame them. However, if everyone is low on Winston with his weapons, his fantasy potential could be astronomical. With or without Kamara, I’m in on Winston right now.
As mentioned, I don’t like the guy, but I like to win in fantasy. Winston has the arm to throw TDs, but can he make the right decisions and avoid interceptions? Can he see 100%? With his WR room, I like his chances to have a good fantasy season. He’s at least in the top half of all fantasy QBs and that shouldn’t be a reach. I think he can surprise some people and get close to the top 10 if all goes well. Time will tell, but Jameis Winston could be the sneaky QB that helps you win your fantasy league, you’ve been warned.
