No, this is not a click bait cheese headline. You are reading that correctly. It’s no more Davey Sell Out. After selling the entire company to Penn Entertainment, the Barstool founder is buying the company back. Dave Portnoy now owns 100% of Barstool Sports again.
Dave Portnoy put out a short presser on his Twitter account to discuss the news:
A lot of things to discuss.
For starters, I think the thing that really stood out in this video is the fact that Penn has now moved to ESPN to do a deal with them. That part is news to me and I’m not sure if that has even leaked yet. Given all of ESPN’s layoffs, it’s interesting to see Penn want to do business with them. With all of the cord cutting, ESPN is a sinking ship. Maybe gambling can save them. It’s also not a surprise that Penn would want to go the cookie-cutter route and do a deal with the Worldwide Leader of Noobs.
The fact that Penn left to do a deal with ESPN is so funny. I just can’t get over it.
I can’t help but think a lot of this drama stems back to the Ben Mintz thing. They were forced to fire him and then Portnoy found a loophole to hire him to work for his watch company. I’m sure that didn’t go over well with the Penn leaders. It’s just one of a million examples of why this pairing was never going to work long term. There are too many regulators involved for Portnoy to stay out of the spotlight.
Also, does this mean that Barstool is out of the gambling sphere? Is it just back to a normal content company? The good news is Portnoy is back in terms of having full creative control. He’s always cared about content and Barstool fans shouldn’t worry about them delivering a bad product. Also, now that he’ back in control, Portnoy will probably work more too.
