Two nights ago, we saw one of the wildest moments of the 2023 MLB season when Jose Ramirez and Tim Anderson squared up to fight at second base. Punches were thrown, and Ramirez connected on a right hook that sent Anderson to the ground. Following the game, the Guardians star told reporters that he felt he was challenged and had to defend himself.
Today, Jose Ramirez appeared on Dominican program El Show del Mediodia for an interview with MLB insider Hector Gomez. He offered an apology for his part in the brawl:
“In light of the recent events, I want to say to the public that I deeply regret what happened between me and Tim Anderson, whom I consider a very good baseball player. I’ve been trying to reach out to him directly and apologize but haven’t received an answer. Everyone who knows me knows well I’m somebody who’s out there looking for trouble. It’s been part of my personality and behavior to give 100% every day at the field to help my team and try to be an example for the younger players on my team. I want to reiterate apologies for my behavior, and as always my goal is to help my team win and reach the postseason. I want to thank everybody in my organization, my teammates, and all my fans for their support during this process.”
Ramirez said he reached out to Anderson but has not heard back from him.
As a result of the benches-clearing incident, Anderson received a six-game suspension, Ramirez three games, and Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase one game. Each team’s manager received a one-game suspension, as did Guardians third base coach Mike Sarbaugh. Anderson and Ramirez plan to appeal their suspensions.
