Training Camp Reports Indicate James Cook Is The Bills’ Best RB By A Mile

Heed the warning. We tried to tell you. It’s time to take James Cook seriously as a fantasy breakout star. Just wait until you see these training camp reports.

Joe Buscaglia of The Athletic (Don’t click the link. It’s behind a paywall) has reported that James Cook is the best running back at Bills’ camp by a wide margin.

“Even though Josh Allen struggled down the stretch and had to be frustrated with all the pressure in his face, he still completed 12-of-19 pass attempts through team drills,” Buscaglia wrote. “And of those 12 completions, second-year running back James Cook came down with five of them. Cook was easily the Bills’ best offensive player (during Tuesday’s practice) with the first unit, making good reads on run opportunities and then showing off his speed and hands as an outlet for Allen.”

Buscaglia notes that Cook has dominated in the passing game as well. He’s not just the best back in camp. The coaches are suggesting that he might be a true starter and play on all three downs. Best offensive player says everything.

The Bills did sign Damien Harris, but there are a lot of touches up for grabs here. Devin Singletary was kinda the guy last year and touched the ball 215 times last year. If Cook gets that kind of volume in this offense, we could be looking at a real steal in fantasy.

Cook was also productive when given opportunities as a rookie. It just didn’t happen that often. The former Georgia product averaged 5.7 yards per carry in 89 attempts. Dating back to college, if you read the stock report series, you already know that he catches the ball really well. This is someone we have been high on during the predraft process and has all the potential to explode in 2023.
