Utah State quarterback Jordan Love is one of the most polarizing prospects in the 2020 NFL Draft. A lot of the draft gurus are starting to fall in love with Love for the upside that he has. There is no denying that Love is the wildcard of this draft. The problem is he has far too much bust potential to be taken seriously as an elite prospect.
The chances that Jordan Love turns into a total bust are high. Jordan Love is never going to be an accurate quarterback if he never fixes his footwork. It reminded me of when I saw Mitch Trubisky and DeShone Kizer throw at the combine. Both Trubisky and Kizer had awful footwork and really had no chance to make it. While Love has better tools than both of those names, Love’s footwork is a death sentence type of problem.
The feet do not lie when it comes to Jordan Love. He’s never going to be accurate with his mechanics. The stats point to that being the case. 27 percent of Love’s attempts were marked at UNCATCHABLE. That’s a stupid high number. We’re not talking about low or high throws. We’re talking about 27 percent of the time he doesn’t even come close to the receiver he’s throwing the ball to. It’s something that will never change with his footwork.
I’ve also heard things that Love has this ridiculous arm talent. It’s just not accurate. I think he’s got a good arm but this idea that Love is being comped to Mahomes is ridiculous. You don’t see the pure arm strength especially on out routes.
Love has a lot less horse power than he thinks he does. He also makes horrendous decisions. It’s not an accident why he threw 17 interceptions. Love has not show any ability to read defenses and make good decisions.
I thought this comment by Trent Dilfer is very interesting. Skip to the 4:45 mark.
Most media people have nothing but positive things to say. Especially someone like Trent Dilfer who is a quarterback and runs QB camps. He is normally optimistic when it comes to QB prospects. For Dilfer to say some of the things he did tells the story.
Yes, coaching is going to matter and Gary Anderson is not great. However, even when things went right there still were red flags. Love has some flashy tools. Nobody is denying that. However, Dilfer hit the nail on the head. Most of his production in 2018 come on first read home runs. With worse coaching, Love showed no ability to read defenses on his own. “You don’t take redshirts in the first round”. We’re probably talking about a 2-year redshirt here too.
Where I disagree is I liked Drew Lock a hell of a lot more than Love. Lock started at Missouri as a Freshman and was productive in the SEC. Drew Lock has an undeniable rifle. Love had problems producing in the Mountain West.
At the end of the day, Jordan Love has major footwork issues and will never be accurate because of that. Not only is he inaccurate, Love has never shown an ability to read defenses. Not to mention that Love also got caught with Marijuana in college. Doing it is one thing, being dumb enough to get caught is another which plays into decision making. The more digging I do, the more way out I am on Jordan Love. I have Love ranked 6th on my quarterback big board and I feel pretty confident about it. Potential landing spots could mean everything for this type of player.
