One of the PFF Draft guys dropped an interesting nugget that I want to dive deeper on in an article based on prior things I’ve written. The 2020 NFL Draft is fascinating when evaluating all of the quarterbacks because there are so many high profile names to choose from. One way to separate them is by accuracy. Mike Renner of PFF dropped some stats on short and intermediate accuracy by the quarterbacks in this class.
Additionally, Jake Fromm sat at 18.9 percent and Jacob Eason sat at 11.9 percent.
Sure, it’s just one stat. However, I think it tells an accurate story. Tua has elite ball placement. Seeing him top the list feels correct by watching the games. It was surprising to see Jalen Hurts two but he did improve at Oklahoma and Lincoln Riley certainly helped his stock. Burrow was great this year but he did on small occasions loft some balls in the air that his weapons helped him out on. Then we get to Jordan Love and Justin Herbert.
This idea that Jordan Love and Justin Herbert are in the same conversation as someone like Tua is banana land. Love has horrendous feet. He’s never going to be accurate on a consistent basis unless he fixes that issue. Justin Herbert has issues reading defenses and isn’t accurate.
Here is an even crazier stat about Justin Herbert. The Oregon quarterback threw 99 screen passes last season out of 428 attempts. 23.2 percent of his attempts were screen passes! The fact that his completion percentage was at 63 percent with such an egregious low depth of target shows you that his accuracy is a joke.
Again, both Love and Herbert have the raw physical tools to thrive. Both have height, mobility, and arm strength. They’re just not that good at the other quarterback stuff. For context on how poor their accuracy stacks up, here’s more info on previous classes.
When I called Justin Herbert a homeless man version of Josh Allen, I meant it. You think Josh Allen isn’t accurate. Wait until you see Justin Herbert. Jordan Love threw 17 interceptions AT UTAH STATE. Go back to that Colorado State game I wanted to vomit. The teams that draft Justin Herbert and Jordan Love won’t be able to sleep at night for years. I’d be terrified to draft either.
