The longest day of the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine includes the quarterbacks, wide receivers, and tight ends. It’s a long day and even starts an hour later than normal. If you haven’t already, check out the offensive line and running back notes from yesterday. This article will focus on the quarterbacks.

In my combine preview piece, I wrote I liked 3 guys but didn’t love any. Well Kyler Murray didn’t compete today so I won’t be talking about him today. That leaves the rest of the group. Who stood out for better or worse at the 2019 NFL Scouting Combine!

Top of the class

Dwayne Haskins and Drew Lock were the best two guys today. They are also with Murray the two other guys that I like but don’t love. I think we kind of got more of that vibe.

Haskins just reminds me of Jameis Winston coming out of Florida State. He isn’t athletic and ran a 5.04 which is similar to Winston’s 4.97. They both have identical size and weight. The good news is Haskins doesn’t appear to be an idiot off the field which is important. Haskins had a cool and calm demeanor to him. The moment didn’t seem too big for him.

Haskins isn’t always perfect. There are misses here and there. Probably because his feet aren’t always in rhythm. He does throw a beautiful ball with plus arm strength. It’s more of an upper body delivery but there are no complaints here. Haskins showed that he has what it takes to become a franchise quarterback. Now you just have to hope that he’s a better Jameis Winston because that’s what I think you will be getting.

Drew Lock just keeps throwing dart. I know I said that at the Senior Bowl too but that’s what he does. The ball just jumps out of his hand. Lock really drives the ball with his legs and loads that back foot which you love to see. It’s beautiful to watch. Lock is good. How good? I think he can be a starter. Better than Trubitchsky? Oh yeah. Better than Matt Ryan? Probably not but maybe closer than you think.

I don’t even want to get into some of the quarterbacks that I won’t waste my time talking about. Just go and click this link and you will find what you’re looking for.

Average Jones

Daniel Jones is just average. There’s no other word for it. There was a portion in the drill where the quarterbacks were doing deep ball throws. Jones needed to do a crow hop just to reach the receiver down the field. I can’t imagine that his velocity throwing numbers are even average. He has good size but that’s about it. Just a tall quarterback who isn’t that talented.

I thought Will Grier was underwhelming. I thought he had more zip on his ball in the past but didn’t see that today. Not accurate either. Brett Rypien missed a bunch too. His feet were really narrow in his drop and it messed with his accuracy. Easton Stick is just not a good enough thrower to make it. Nick Fitzgerald should try how tight end works out.

For what it’s worth, I thought Jarrett Stidham looked okay again. He reminded me of Bryce Petty from a few years ago. Throws a decent ball but you can just see that the overall talent isn’t there.

Wildcards

I love looking for wildcards. Boom or bust. Patrick Mahomes was the most recent wildcard that hit in a big way. Mahomes had sloppy feet but he had such a special arm that he turned into an MVP. This year we have Tyree Jackson who is almost too tall at 6-foot-7. He’s just so long that it makes him miss. Too much going on with his mechanics. Every once and awhile, you watch a throw and you black out for a second because of how pretty it was. Jackson has a gun on him with big velocity. The 4.59 – 40 time makes him very interesting as a potential run threat too. He might just be that poor man’s Josh Allen that you want to get on your team to see what you have. I wouldn’t be shocked if he makes it.

The other one I like is Kyle Shurmur. He threw nice balls with clean mechanics. Never too much going on. Showed decent zip. Vandy had Notre Dame beat this year and Shurmur was good in that one. Just keep an eye on him. Smarts with Vandy background helps.
