Jalen Milroe 2025 NFL Draft Profile

We’re very much entering into wildcard territory when discussing the 2025 NFL Draft profile on Jalen Milroe. Coaching is going to be a big factor in whether Milroe can become something are not. The tools are there. So are the mind-numbing moments. Guys like that usually teeter one way or another based on who’s developing the player. When discussing the Alabama quarterback, we’ll do our best to remove that element from the equation.

Although, I think coaching is probably a really good place to start with Milroe.

Yes, there was actually a method to my madness with that last intro paragraph, can you believe it?

Anywho… we’re talking about a guy who had access to some of the best in the business. Nick Saban is the goat, and Kalen DeBoer’s record speaks for itself. Honestly, DeBoer’s inability to help Milroe probably says more about Milroe, given his track record of success. That part, however, is TBD until we see what happens with Keelon Russell at Alabama.

It would be fair to say I watched a lot of Milroe this year ^. If you check out the Stock notes, you will notice one big theme. When Milroe successfully cashed in on the rushing element, he had great games. In the games that wasn’t the case, he was vomit-worthy terrible. The Georgia game was the peak of his season. Milroe legitimately looked like a first rounder that day. On the flip side, games against South Carolina, Tennesee, and Oklahoma were beyond terrible. Not to mention the fact that the Bowl game loss against Michigan left the ultimate sour taste in your mouth.

What’s crazy is that Milroe took a step back from what we saw in 2024. In 2023, Saban figured out how to unleash him. Zero intermediate passes. Everything is going short or it’s deep ball city. Then the designed runs while leaning on the overall run attack. By the way, the deep ball cheese is probably the thing to hang your hat on here if you’re a believer. The pure arm strength is really good and he’s hit a ton of these shots down the field in the past.

In 2024, DeBoer tried to get him to be that shotgun quarterback. He improved from being a zero in the intermediate part of the field to being passable. Over time, it just totally crumbled. The numbers back that up too. Milroe went from a 24-5 TD to INT ratio to 16-11 this past year. Asking Milroe to go win you games as a shotgun quarterback airing it out wasn’t the smartest idea…

Milroe, 22, checks in at 6-foot-2, 217, and was a four star prospect out of the state of Texas. He spent time backing up Bryce Young before taking the reins in 2023. You’re looking at just the two years of production – one with Saban, one with DeBoer.

By the way, decision making might be a problem here, but I don’t think it’s from a matter of having a low IQ. Milroe won the Academic Heisman this past year. I think a lot of his issues tend from accuracy issues. As I said in my Combine notes, he’s built like a Greek God. Physically imposing and a powerful human but resembles a baseball pitcher who throws a nice fastball with nothing else to go along with it. Can you build that nuance and feel into his game? That’s the question. Maybe more consistency will start to show up here, but at some point, it feels foolish to believe the corner will be turned.

The red flags are pretty obvious. He wants to take off and run with the eye level dropping to do what he wants to do. He played his best ball when it was look for the deep shot, if it’s not there, go head and run. 32 rushing touchdowns are nothing to scoff at, and he’s the fastest and best pure runner out of any of these quarterbacks. The problem is he was so brutal as a passer at the Senior Bowl it’s hard to believe it’s going to change.

By the way, he played his worst football against the best competition in the SEC. 5-10 TD to INT ratio in just SEC play alone. Lacks anticipation, and when the speed of the game increases… he can’t just win by running… it gets ugly fast. It’s also fairly obvious he likes working to the right side of the field and moving in that direction on the move. Smart DCs may scheme their defenses to force him left and then you wonder what really happens then?

Also, I have no idea why he didn’t run the 40 at the Combine. That was so stupid. It would have given him positive momentum through this process. I guarantee that time would have been blazing fast for the position.

I have a middle round grade on Jalen Milroe. Middle as in during the 4th round, I may begin to start consider taking him. I just think we saw too much of the formula at Alabama to make you go any higher. When he couldn’t win the game with his legs, things got so ugly it’s hard to believe it’s going to ever get to a point where he’s a franchise quarterback.

Comp = Significantly better Blake Sims mixed in with a more physically imposing Kordell Stewart
