2025 Reese’s Senior Bowl: American Team Game Notes

The American team won a thriller of a game at the 2025 Reese’s Senior Bowl 22-19. Before I jump into the game notes, one last reminder that we have the tape practice footage this year so more in-depth content will be on the way. This post is more of a flash takeaway post that caught my attention watching it live. Hope you guys have enjoyed the draft coverage this year as VSM strives to take our stuff to another level year after year. Without further ado, here are your American Team game notes from the 2025 Reese’s Senior Bowl!

Quarterbacks:

Riley Leonard gets the start. He actually threw the ball alright. Threw the ball better than Dillon Gabriel from the National Team. Not a noodle arm either. Finished the game 6/7 for 54 yards. It’s a matter of if he can become Daniel Jones. That’s his bar. Life is about expectations. Are you good with that? If not, don’t even bother because that’s the ceiling.

Jaxson Dart takes over in the second. Should have had an easy touchdown to Bech cause he couldn’t throw it over the top on a beautiful flea flicker that should have worked. Luckily, Bech made a great catch working to the ball. Ran for a touchdown in the end zone. Mobility hasn’t ever been a problem of his. Had another underthow to Arian Smith that wasn’t completed.

He didn’t look good throwing the ball. His touch accuracy isn’t good enough. Doesn’t drive the ball off the back foot. Finished the game 1/3 for 39 yards and it all came on the underthrow on the flea flicker. Picked up some stats in the rushing category including a rushing score. I see some sort of mixture between Matt Corral and Zach Wilson. Maybe he can be a better version of that but you’re insane if you think his week at the Senior Bowl pushed him up the board.

Jalen Milroe gets the third. First throw is an inaccurate check down to the Deleware back. He’s way too inaccurate to take seriously. Dirted another ball on a throw over the middle. Didn’t make any plays in the run game and even got chased down by UCLA for a sack. 3/5 for 21 yards and took three sacks. It’s all the Anthony Richardson vibes all over again except he’s faster while being less physically imposing. The ceiling is there but how do you sleep at night turning the card in high here?

Seth Henigan was the last to check in late in the third quarter. He was totally irrelevant in practice. Drops the snap on like his first chance and gives the ball away. He did lead the comeback drive to win the game on this touchdown to Bech. He actually performed the best but was irrelevant in the week of practice. I’m not sure how much you want me to overanalyze nothing but he did go 12/14 for 132 yards and the game winning score.

Running Backs:

Trevor Etienne gets the first carry. Five carries for 12 yards. Wasn’t anything crazy but has nice cuts and passes the movement skills department.

Devin Neal isn’t terrible. He has something to him. The a smoothness to his game with plus vision and balance. Not small either. Three carries for six yards. Didn’t see much but I can see that he’s not terrible.

RJ Harvey had some really nice runs. Has speed. His cuts and wiggle are really good. Then he comes up with a touchdown trick play too. He was by far the most explosive running back in this group. Four carries for 24 yards. Looks stronger than at the start of his career. He’s going to be a rotational back who can catch for someone.

You could also argue Jarquez Hunter was the most impressive back. It was really about what he did catching the ball. Three grabs for 30 yards. Big body who can move too. Been a fan of his.

Wide Receivers:

Arian Smith fumbled on a strip by Iowa safety. He was technically down but no replay and it sums him up well. Guy can’t do anything beyond run fast. What more evidence do you need to see? Tulane put him in his back pocket on a deep ball. He did beat 31 for a catch but I don’t even know who that is. Must be a late add.

Nice contested catch on the flea flicker that was underthrown by Jack Bech. Showed some toughness. Looks like his hands work. The TCU product was the standout in this group. Six receptions for 68 yards and a score. He’s not McConkey but he just might be something. Has some height on him. Knows how to work towards the ball and make a play. Looks tough and caught mostly everything thrown his way. Curious to see what he runs. Either way, really nice showing and makes me want to go back and investigate further.

Tight Ends:

Other than CJ Dipree getting blown by on a sack trying to block, I have nothing to add. He absolutely sucks. The Nebraska guy Thomas Fidone stinks too. He had one catch. Otherwise, nothing to report.

Offensive Line:

Eye test wise, Arizona’s Jonah Savaiinaea can play. He’s going to be a big hit at guard for someone. Played tackle too but was more dominant inside. He’s passed the test this week.

Garrett Dellinger, it felt like he got flagged 800 times. False starts, holding calls, I mean it was constant. If this was a real game, he would have been yanked off the field within five minutes.

Carson Vinson couldn’t block Landon Jackson if his life depended on it. Gross performance. Gross week of practice too. Guy stinks. He can’t block anybody. Landon Jackson comes off the field he can’t block Jah Joyner either. Gives up another sack to UCLA. It’s a complete joke if someone drafts this guy.

Clay Webb stinks too. Got beat up the whole game by multiple guys. He’s just not good. Giving up pressure constantly. Arkansas State was shaky during the practices and he beat him for a sack no problem.

Those two ^ played together on the left side of the line. Swiss cheese the whole time.

Thumbs up for Jacob Bayer.

Defensive Line:

The length Sai’Vion Jones has can’t be ignore. He just creates pressure. He beats North Dakota State for a big time TFL in the run game. So damn versatile. Matchup nightmare for people. They can’t block him. Constant penetration. I can’t stress enough how good he looked. Caused problems on virtually every snap. He was the MVP of this defense, especially at the start of the game with all the other listed starters.

Aeneas Peebles can make some things happen. He’s slippery. Plays with leverage and made some positive impact plays.

Princely Umanmielen picked up a sack. Got there with the help of Sai’Vion Jones but showed his typical bend and what makes him a player on this play. Clearly has talent. I bet he tests well at the combine.

Linebackers:

Smael Mondon almost had a pick. His range is a problem. Made a hell of a play getting to the Pitt tight end and making a play. I’m not leaving the draft without this guy.

Eugene Asante all over the place again. Led the team with six tackles.

Cornerbacks:

Mac McWilliams lost a jump ball on the trick play pass to Jayden Higgins. Thought McWilliams had a good showing in practice but definitely need a better effort here defending this ball. Especially when a running back is throwing it.

Safeties:

Keep an eye on this Caleb Ransaw. Showed off some coverage. Tackled well. Comes away with a pick against Shough. Made another pass break up covering Noel and almost picked that one off too. For a safety, he covers really well.

Dan Jackson doing more of the same as we saw all week. Big hit on Lane to break up a pass. Guy has grit and just has those instincts to play the ball.
