No storytime today. Sorry, but there’s so much to do around here and I don’t have enough help to pass that stuff onto other people. I’ll let you know when the Shawne Merriman interview is if and when that happens. Ditto for the consigliere role in running the East-West programming. Here are your 2025 Reese’s Senior Bowl American Team Day 2 practice notes!
Quarterback:
I’m not going to sit here and blow Jaxson Dart. Doesn’t look comfortable under center. Sailing balls. Whole team period under center he just looked like he had to itch himself or something. My comp from watching him during the year is Matt Corral with more upside running the ball. I don’t see any reason to move off that. Throws much better against air not being under center. Doesn’t have bad arm power. With zero pressure in his face, he can throw some ropes.
Jalen Milroe just looks bad. How many times is he going to dirt a ball? It’s ketchup on a tomahawk steak bad. Fingerpainting bad. Not an artist. He looks bad to the point that I’m not sure he’s actually a quarterback, which sounds disrespectful but it’s a mess so how do I not bring it up? I don’t know what he’s doing. Out here taking sacks and then throwing half assed lollipops. The best thing he has going for him is the horse power and the ability to complete deep balls. Other than that, it’s been ugly.
Riley Leonard can’t help himself. Nobody wants to watch you go QB draw mode in team period buddy. The lack of self awareness is crazy. Let the ball rip. He just takes off and runs. That’s not going to work in the NFL dude. Not accurate either. Inconsistent footwork and sailing balls.
I wish I had more to say on Seth Henigan. I just don’t. He’s just kinda there.
Running Back:
Brashard Smith has shown he’s capable in the pass game. Looks smooth. Don’t know beyond that.
Trevor Etienne is insane pass catching wise. The knee bend department he has it. He’s not a freak show but he’s a player. Best route runner of the RB group.
RJ Harvey is underrated man. Has a burst. Stupid good in the passing game. Quick feet in the bag drills.
Deleware pass catcher only. Sproles vibes. Not as thick but that’s what he can do.
Wide Receiver:
Jack Bech reeled in a prayer ball thrown by Milroe. Worked back to the ball well beating 27 in a contested catch situation. Didn’t beat 26 over the top. Can’t really get open. He’s crafty but he’s not separating from anyone elite. Accuracy just far from ideal. Another ball with way too much hot air on it that’s too high.
Arian Smith caught a screen pass in team period. Credit to him for doing that because catching the ball is far from automatic for him. Glad to see the coaching staff knows what they have too. Hey, let’s get the gimmick involved. I guess we’re calling a screen. Falling down all over the place in one on one. No thank you.
Jalen Royals just rag-dolled Tulane. Refs threw an OPI flag but who cares. I’ve liked what I’ve seen. Keeps winning his rep. Not crazy separation but winning and getting open.
Tight End:
Mason Taylor is having a good day. Showing off some catch radius. Movement skills are pretty good.
Jake Briningstool looks like every other Clemson TE they have put out recently. Tall, can kinda run, not a blocker, just there. Davis Allen vibes. Who cares. Not wasting a pick on this. Although I’ll admit as a pure receiver there are moments he’s very passable.
Dipree sucks. Can’t catch. Bowman put him to bed. Bowman hasn’t beaten anybody else.
Offensive Line:
Clay Webb was up and down but overall sort of impressed. Did a really nice job against Florida.
Emery Jones with a win on Shemar Stewart. Good kickslide. Looks natural and not out of place. Physically belongs. He’s making it look very easy. Looks like competition going in slow-mo against him. Takes care of Sorrell like he’s a wimp. I was blown away actually. He looked damn good. Don’t see any reason he can’t stick at tackle. Has an edge to him. Did play some guard in team setting too.
Willie Lampkin has serious heart. He’s very undersized but keeps winning anyway. Punting TJ Sanders to the ground is impressive. Beats Georgia in another rep. Doesn’t look like he’s being outpowered all things considered. It’s almost like you’re waiting for him to tank but it doesn’t happen.
Jacob Bayer is just steady. Bends well. Has a nice base. Isn’t crazy talented but did a good job beating Florida. Got another win against TJ Sanders and made it look easy.
Jonah Savaiinaea had an excellent rep against Alabama. Didn’t give up an inch. It’s not full blown Fuaga vibes but he’s within striking distance and looks like a real player.
No practice for Armand Membou today. Looks like he shut it down for one reason or another.
Defensive Line:
Deone Walker is a back bender. I’m not sure it’s going to be fixed. He’s way too high. I mean way too high. Pad level will be a problem. Knee bend doesn’t look fixable. There’s a line of demarcation for him. Can’t take him overly high. Looks better in team setting where other guys can feed off him. Blowing up a ton of plays in team setting.
Walter Nolen is crazy. Webb had no chance. Guy has it all. It’s going to be up to him. Needs a lion tamer. Needs someone to tell him to be great and to work hard. It’s like watching a cannon ball get shot into a ship.
Tim Smith went right through LSU. Has some quicksand to his game but put him to the ground.
TJ Sanders not as good today. Never had that wow moment.
Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins couldn’t get anything going against Sacramento State. Frankly, I’m not sure why he’s here because the East-West Georgia guys were better.
Bending won’t be a problem for Princely Umanmielen. Has the rush moves. How powerful is he? If he can’t win cute can he win? Powered back 76 but it’s obvious 76 is bad. Different story against Jones at LSU. Didn’t have a prayer against him. Had some good moments in team period.
Barryn Sorrell has something to him. Very natural bending on the bags. Beat Arizona with a straight power move. Coaches decided the best on best to end the practice was Sorrell vs. Jones. I’m not arguing with them if that was their best on best choices. Both Jones and Sorrell were good. Level of comp on both sides says a lot. Like both players.
Kyle Kennard is a bit tight hipped. A bit too high. Not super impressed. First step isn’t crazy. Trying to read the snap count flinching and still got off slow. 76 put him to the ground. Not saying he sucks but he’s not A DUDE.
Shemar Stewart belongs physically. Has next to zero production on the field. Has some power but has a lot to figure out. He did have a sack fumble in team period working against Jones. You can see why people are intrigued. There is a reason why people will eat the cheese here. Tools are there.
Jared Ivey doesn’t have the wow of Nolen but he’s something. Should be inside rusher but they used him outside.
Sai’vion Jones has strong hand fighting. Just straight stiff armed his way to a win against Alabama A&M. I love this player. Lined up inside and beat Bayer with ease. He’s very versatile and has super long arms that he knows how to use.
RJ Oben has some try hard vibes but he doesn’t suck. Couldn’t get by Miles Frazier (the worse LSU guy) in the one on ones. Looks a bit spazzy. Not real pass rush arsenal.
Linebackers:
Just haven’t seen enough on the TV copy to say anything. They used Auburn’s Asante during the best on best session so that should tell you something.
Cornerback:
Maxwell Hairston had no problems covering Arian Smith. Good to see because he kept up speed wise.
Trey Amos came up a bit gimpy in team period. If he shuts it down, I don’t blame him. Don’t need to see anymore. Guy is a stud.
Safeties:
Dan Jackson great job covering Mason Taylor. PBU and kept up speed wise. Dan Jackson is a fighter. PBU against Georgia Tech.
Billy Bowman let Arkansas beat him over the top for a big gain. Can’t happen. Arkansas isn’t good, which is concerning. Can’t cover Clemson either.
