Wardlaw just did the post on Chase Claypool hitting the bench for the Chicago Bears. If that’s the case, can we just take a moment in time to reflect upon the worst trade in the NFL over the last calendar year? The Chase Claypool trade is officially a disaster for Chicago and I have no idea how Ryan Poles is still employed because of it.
The craziest part about this trade is it made zero sense at the time. It was idiotic back then. We don’t need hindsight for it. I usually try to stay bias free when doing pure news posts. That or at least try to give you both sides of the argument. When I did the article on the Claypool back then, I hated it and I couldn’t have felt more confident about it being an awful trade by the Bears. Anybody that trades down in the draft to swap Roquan Smith for Chase Claypool has absolutely zero idea how to run a football team. There isn’t much more that needs to be said there.
As bad as the trade looked then, I’m not sure I could have predicted that he would be a possible cut candidate prior to finishing out his rookie contract. The guy flat out stinks. It doesn’t help that the Bears can’t throw the ball in general, but Claypool is borderline terrible. The former Notre Dame product didn’t have a catch in Week one and only has 14 total receptions for 140 yards in eight games for Chicago. Hashtag not great.
The aftermath of the deal is now becoming comical. We knew Roquan Smith would improve the Ravens’ defense. That happened late last year. The funniest part is the Bears gave up the first pick in the second round to acquire Claypool. That player turned out to be Joey Porter Jr. who may wind up being the best cornerback in the draft.
What a disaster. Again… explain to me why Poles is still employed. The Bears suck. Tell me how he’s helping improve that team? I’ll wait.
