Gustav Forsling Exemplifies Why The Hurricanes’ Team-Building Model Will Never Work

Did you know the Hurricanes had Gustav Forsling on their roster, and they ended up putting him on waivers? Years later, Forsling is the best defenseman on a team that just won the Stanley Cup two years in a row.

Guess what?

Eetu Luostarinen was also in the Hurricanes’ farm system.

So was Nic Roy, who was used to acquire Mitch Marner.

There are talented players all over the league who used to be property of the Hurricanes. The only difference is that people haven’t realized that their team-building strategy is flawed, and it comes straight from ownership. The Hurricanes don’t believe in going for it. They want to win and create prospects at the same time. Which is cool and ideal on paper, except when you realize you don’t have roster spots to keep all these guys, and it takes a special person to properly evaluate your own players.

I’m not here to trash the Hurricanes. They’re a good team and have been for a sustained period of time. The truth of the matter is, they’re just also a stepping stone at the same time. What Cowboy Cerrone was in the UFC forever. If you beat Cerrone, we’ll take you seriously. If you don’t, you were never a real contender. That’s Carolina.

It’s never going to change as long as you continue to let this nerd, Eric Tulsky, run the show. There’s a method to his madness, but there’s also a reason why superstars like Mikko Rantanen wanted no part of it. Bad planning cost them Jake Guentzel. They will get some homegrown guys to buy in, but the rest of the supporting cast will continue to churn over, keeping them in the same spot they have been. A future punching bag for Florida to laugh at on their way to the Finals.

The Hurricanes are wasting time. They’re a con in a much bigger game. The sad part is they won’t figure it out until it’s far too late, and guys like Aho, Slavin, etc, age out of their prime… and start all over again with the same BS thought process.
