The timing on this story is a tad weird. I took a ricochet shot at Zech McPhearson in the Marcus Mariota post I just did. I thought the former Texas Tech product was terrible during the preseason game yesterday. Well, it turns out that just being bad in the game would have been a better alternative than the news that dropped today.
It turns out, McPhearson tore his Achilles during the game against the Browns. He will miss the entire 2023-24 NFL Season.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network was the first to report the news:
Dear, NFL teams. Stop playing your starters in the preseason. It’s so brain dead. Your top 35 guys on your 53 man roster shouldn’t play a single snap during the preseason. We’re talking about grown men. If college football doesn’t have preseason, then the NFL doesn’t need one. Guys in their 20’s don’t forget how to play football. Sorry, but you’re dumb if you’re playing anybody important in the preseason. Nolan Smith suffered an injury scare too that doesn’t appear too serious. But why was he even on the field?
McPhearson was viewed as an important piece for this Eagles team. James Bradberry and Darius Slay are your outside corners. McPhearson was expected to start in the slot. Avonte Maddox is going to get that spot back (in reality he probably was the better option anyway). Philadelphia does have cornerback depth behind McPhearson including Eli Ricks, Greedy Williams, Josh Jobe, and Kelee Ringo.
