The Eagles Should Just Cut Marcus Mariota
Did anybody watch that preseason game between the Browns and Eagles yesterday? I never try to overreact to preseason football, but I do think you can take certain things away from each game. Zech McPherson stinks, Nolan Smith is going to be awesome, and Philadelphia should just go right ahead and cut Marcus Mariota.
Speaking of Mariota, he was terrible in that game going 9-17 for 86 yards and a pick. He missed easy throw after easy throw. The only difference is, this isn’t anything new. I thought he was terrible at Oregon to the point where I ranked an undrafted guy out of East Carolina ahead of him in that draft. Every step of the way, I’ve basically been proven right.
The numbers are what the numbers are. 92 touchdowns and 54 interceptions in 87 games. It’s not good enough. It’s never been good enough. The guy lost his job to Desmond Ridder who blows and then he quit on the team. He lost his job to Ryan Tannehill who the Titans are currently trying to replace now. The Raiders flushed money down the toilet by signing him.
We all saw the Netflix series with Mariota on it. The whole thing was a joke. He’s quiet, can’t really throw, and brings nothing to the table. It’s hard to get booed during a preseason game by the home team. Yet, that’s exactly what happened yesterday.

The backup quarterback job belongs to Tanner McKee. The Stanford product isn’t someone I was super high on coming out. It gave me Carson Strong PTSD. He’s just totally dead in the lower half and can’t really move at all. It’s not really someone that you would think of as an ideal backup for Jalen Hurts either. He at least showed he can move the sticks and make semi accurate throws. That right there is something Mariota can’t say.
Sometimes you just gotta take the L. There is no point in keeping Mariota on this roster. If Hurts gets hurt, the season is over anyway. You’re better off trying to roll with McKee as the backup while keeping an extra player on the roster that you would have had to cut otherwise.
