The Von Miller contract is a disaster for the Bills

Listen, being an NFL general manager is very hard. They have endless amounts of decisions to make on a daily basis, so naturally, they are going to get some wrong. But for Brandon Beane and this Buffalo Bills front office, the decision to not give Von Miller a six-year, $120 million contract should have been an easy one.

At the time of the deal, Miller was 32-years-old with a history of injuries already under his name.

Aside from the injury history, it had become clear that Miller’s best days were already behind him. He wasn’t bad by any means, but wasn’t close to his dominant Bronco days that the Bills seemed to think they would get.

He still gave the Bills solid production during his first year and a half before tearing his ACL. Ever since, he has been horrible, really almost non-existent. To top it all off, a warrant is currently out for his arrest, and we don’t know if or when Von Miller will play again.

Oh, and $10.7 million is already guaranteed for Miller next year; talk about wasted cap space. I fail to understand the thought process behind this deal. You were taking on an injury-prone pass-rusher who was past his prime but paying him like he wasn’t.

Sure, the warrant is a bad break, but all that changes is now Miller will have an excise for finishing a game with zero tackles. The thing is, it doesn’t even seem like the defense is going to miss him. They rank second in team sacks and that’s with Von Miller having zero on the year.

Their defense hasn’t been perfect by any means, but the pass rush has not been the issue for them; in fact, it’s been a strength. This means you have all that money tied to Miller to play a position you seemingly don’t need help with.

The Bills are clearly in their Super Bowl window and have struggled to get over that AFC championship hump. Don’t you think that $20 million a season wouldn’t go a long way in getting them over it? I sure think so.

In typical Bills fashion, though, they will always find a way to screw it up. They seem determined to keep Sean McDermont despite his uncanny ability to lose games, with this Von Miller contract serving as just another roadblock in the way of a Super Bowl.

The decision to sign Von Miller was a stupid one by the Bills. It’s so stupid that it just might prevent them from ever getting that Super Bowl and taking advantage of the MVP-caliber QB they have in Josh Allen. I guess that’s just how they do things in Buffalo.
