The NCAA wrestling championships are almost here! I have been breaking down all the weights at the tournament for Vendetta. Here is the preview for the 197-pound weight class. I already broke down the 125, 133, 141, 149, 157, 165, 174, and 184-pound weight classes.
The story at this weight is how wide open this bracket seems to be. There aren’t any big names that stand out as clear cut favorites, just a bunch of wrestlers looking to win a national title.
Myles Amine from Michigan is the number one seed at this weight. He won the Big Ten title beating the two-seed Eric Schultz. Amine won the match 7-3, but it was closer than the score made it seem. He got a last-second takedown on a bad shot by Schultz to extend the lead to four points.
AJ Ferrari from Oklahoma State is the number four seed, with a record of 15-1. He won the Big 12 tournament as the four seed defeating Stephen Buchanan in the finals 13-8.
The high scoring freshman is capable of scoring big moves and is relentless in his attacks, but the freshman inexperience could be something to keep an eye on in the tournament
Cameron Caffey from Michigan State comes into the tournament as the 10 seed and is on the favorable side of the bracket. He barely lost to Schultz in the Big Ten semifinals 2-1 and has the tournament experience from years prior.
Jay Aiello from Virginia is another guy who can make a deep run at the tournament. He is the 11 seed this year, but won the ACC championship in 2020 and has already qualified to nationals twice. He is also on the favorable side of the bracket so if he wins his first round match he will wrestle Nino Bonaccorsi from Pitt, another ACC wrestler.
The match I have my eye on for round one in this weight is the 5 seed versus the 28 seed. Jacob Warner from Iowa is the five seed and is squaring off against Nick Reenan from North Carolina State. Reenan has qualified for the national tournament twice at two different weights. The experience Reenan has can propel him for a first-round upset and a potential All-American finish.
This is the most wide open weight of the tournament I think. I kept think AJ Ferrari is one of the next true studs in college wrestling. The freshman is going to break on to the national scene this weekend, upset Amine and make the finals.
I got Ferrari over Schultz in the finals in what will be the launching point for the Oklahoma State Cowboy.
TL//DR: The NCAA wrestling championship 197 pound preview. This is the most wide open weight of the tournament it Ferrari could win it all.
