Michael Mayer 2023 NFL Draft Profile

If you came for controversy, you came to the right place. I think Michael Mayer stinks and I haven’t exactly been shy about sharing that take. Things are going to get ugly by the end of this one but I promise you will understand where my head is at by the end of it. Here is your Michael Mayer 2023 NFL Draft profile!

You can read the stock report notes yourself. When you watch Mayer, I see obvious flaws that I’m not sure are fixable. He’s just not a good hands catcher. Not sure he ever will be. He looks like an offensive lineman trying to catch the ball. Had egregious drops at the combine too. That might be okay in college but when you’re not a chain mover type athlete, good luck. Not sure it’s sustainable at the NFL level.

You will also notice in the stock report notes that I said I would slap myself if he ran under 4.7. Trey was right again. Mayer checked in at 4.7 on the nose. He’s also not as big as you would think. Yes, has size at 6-foot-4, 249 but we’re also not talking about Gronk level huge. The 4.7 here just isn’t good enough and he looks slow compared to the other modern day tight ends.

The blocking is probably a B but for sure not an A. He’s really sluggish off the line of scrimmage in both aspects. Kancey the defensive tackle from Pittsburgh had a better 10 yard split time than Mayer. What does that tell you? He’s also going to provide zero YAC ability.

The production is fine. 809 yards and nine touchdowns last year and 840 yards with seven scores the year before. In fairness, Notre Dame had terrible QB play but he was by far the number one option. The ball was going towards Mayer and everybody knew it.

I have Mayer as a 5th round guy full well knowing that he will be off the board by the time I’ll take him. I don’t view him as much different than Notre Dame guys in the past like Durham Smythe and Cole Kmet. They are the definitions of just a guy. Mayer isn’t twitchy enough to where he should be viewed as significantly better than those two.
