The tight end class is viewed as really strong heading into the 2023 NFL Draft. However, that’s only really the case if wild cards like Luke Musgrave turn out to be a hit. What is the likelihood that happens with the Oregon State product? That’s what we’re here to talk about today. Here is your Luke Musgrave 2023 NFL Draft Profile!
For starters, the injury history is a real question mark. I just don’t know how you don’t talk about it. Musgrave played two games as a freshman, six games as a sophomore, finally had a sort of healthy season as a junior playing ten games, then only played two in 2022. The sort of healthy year in 2021, there was almost no production (22 receptions for 304 yards and one score).
Musgrave got off to a hot start in 2022 reeling in 11 receptions for 169 yards and a score. That was before a knee injury ended his season. I’m not a doctor and I don’t predict injuries. However, you better feel confident in that aspect when turning the card in. Without more information from my couch, I’m just not sure how you can.
That being said, the skillset is really intriguing and he could wind up being one of the biggest steals on draft day. 6-foot-6, 253 and runs a 4.61. Now that’s something I want on my football team. He is also the nephew of Bill Musgrave so he has NFL bloodlines. Musgrave was just a three star recruit, but he did have an offer from Oregon. That’s important to note.
In terms of actual talent, I’m not sure I see many red flags. His play strength could use work and it’s no surprise to see him not bench at the combine. Then again, all the movement skills we saw at the combine are really encouraging. Musgrave has all the tools to be a premier tight end at the next level.
I have a firm second round grade on Luke Musgrave but have dropped him down to the third round because of the injury question mark. The talent is obvious and is someone that should develop into a quality starting tight end. Maybe an improved version of Mike Gesicki but can block better but not as polished as Dallas Goedert.
