Drew Doughty: Kings will smack McDavid if given a chance

Drew Doughty demonstrated to Connor McDavid and the rest of the Oilers that he wouldn’t be afraid to lay the body on the Oilers’ captain. Doughty made these comments clear after McDavid laid a controversial hit on Kings defenseman Mikey Anderson earlier this season.

On March 30, the playoff foes met in Edmonton for a regular season game. The Oilers would end up winning the game 2-0, but that wasn’t the highlight of the game. McDavid laid a controversial hit on Anderson only 1:28 into the game. McDavid would be penalized with a boarding penalty, but would receive no further disciplinary action. The Kings, and most notably Doughty, were not fans of the hit on their young prospect.

“We didn’t feel good about it, that’s for sure,” Doughty said, per TSN, via theScore. “I mean, (Anderson) was out for a week, week-and-a-half. We lost some games without him … It’s not something we’ll forget.

“Like I said earlier, we don’t want to be going to the box, so I don’t know that we’re going to be taking dumb penalties on them or anything like that,” Doughty said, via theScore. But if we get a chance to smack (McDavid), we’re going to try to do that.”

Doughty and the Kings have started an underlying rivalry as both teams met in the playoffs last season. The Oilers would come back from a 3-2 lead and win in seven games, advancing to the second round. Now, these two teams are set for revenge in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Los Angeles would go onto steal game one from the Oilers in Edmonton after the Oilers took a 2-0 lead in the first period. Los Angeles would tie the game in the third period with a score of 3-3 and win in overtime. Doughty and the Kings would hold McDavid to zero points and assist in the first game of the seven-game series. Game two starts at 10:00 p.m. ET on April 19.
