Matthew Berry Throws Shade At ESPN, Says Fantasy Football Is ‘Broken

I’m not a fan of Bill Simmons but his episode that drops with Matthew Berry every year is a must-listen (episode link). Now that Berry is no longer at ESPN, it’s now definitely a must-listen.

In one of the video clips that dropped on the BS YouTube Channel, Simmons and Berry had a really good conversation about quarterbacks in fantasy football. Just give it a watch.

Bill Simmons is spot on here even if his take is about 15 years too late. If you’re not playing in a two-quarterback league, what are you doing? If you’re not playing in an auction league, what are you doing? The bottom line is fantasy football is broken and I’m so glad Matthew Berry admitted it.

Respect for Matthew Berry. That guy deserves all the praise today. It’s embarrassing how uneducated the average fan is on fantasy football. We’re at least 10 years behind on teaching the casual fantasy player. The fact that Berry advocated to ESPN to make superflex leagues the default setting on ESPN and they turned him down is so sad.

What’s becoming more and more clear is the fact that Berry is actually pretty good at fantasy. ESPN just totally hindered any real progress he could have actually made. I love the shade too. The old Berry would have never admitted that fact. Berry was always a company man to a fault. I guess you can’t blame him for that.

Never forget.

Everything Berry said is 100% correct. Superflex leagues create urgency in your auction. It makes the league feel more real. Quarterbacks are supposed to be the most valuable position in real life so why aren’t they in fantasy? Any system where the default setting has the best one going in the fourth round is a broken system. Kuddos to Berry for pointing it out. Really good show and worth the listen.

Side note: Do I do a post on what my fantasy team looks like every year? It was just a thought for something to track as more people get familiar with the site.
