The Los Angeles Rams are off to a 4-1 start and have mostly used a three-headed monster at the running back position. Malcolm Brown had a huge Week 1, but Darrell Henderson has been the lead back since then. It’s only a matter of time until Cam Akers turns the tide and dominates this backfield.
Akers, the 2020 2nd round pick out of Florida State, isn’t off to a crazy hot start. The stat sheet isn’t super sexy, 26 carries for 113 yards doesn’t jump out at you, but the advanced numbers tell a different story.
Akers has been the Rams best running back in terms of creating yards for himself. Akers is averaging 4.15 yards after contact per carry. That’s the third-best mark in the league. Additionally, it’s more than 1.5 yards better than Brown and Henderson.
Cam Akers is coming for blood. It’s only a matter of time. Sean McVay is no dummy, he’s seen the guy in practice and already wants to increase his touches. Akers was the number one high school running back recruit in the country for a reason. He’s got special movement skills.
If you’re in a fantasy league and need running back help, buying low on Akers would be a smart investment. Malcolm Brown is what he is. A backup who can specialize in short yardage. I was a fan of Darrell Henderson coming out of the draft. I think he has some talent. He doesn’t have Akers’ potential.
Call it a flag plant. Maybe it doesn’t even happen this year. Akers is an outstanding player and will take over this backfield. There’s too much talent here for this kid to fail.
