Yes, many of you are fully aware that this is Jason Taylor’s son. Did you also know Mason Taylor is the nephew of Zach Thomas too? Anywho, outside of the fact that Mason Taylor has NFL bloodlines, let’s try to diagnose if this is actually a good football player. Without wasting anymore time, here is your 2025 NFL Draft profile on the LSU tight end!
NFL Draft Stock Report: Week 1, Week 3, Week 7, Week 8, Week 9, Week 11, Week 12, Week 13, Senior Bowl (1), (2)
Taylor, 20, was a three star prospect coming out of high school, but did play at the prestigious St. Thomas Aquinas in Florida. He spent all three years at LSU. The raw production isn’t anything outrageous, but he was an impactful player, and all of the stock report notes are right there to check out at your own discretion.
Most of the top tight ends skipped out on the Combine, but Taylor was easily the best performer out of the group of guys that actually competed. He had a really nice showing at the Senior Bowl, too but honestly, there’s really only a few words necessary to describe this player. Really smooth, fluid, under control, and a natural athlete. We don’t have any testing numbers because he skipped all of that stuff but he performed well during the on-field portion.
All of the production numbers are pretty similar across the board. He’s been a contributor since his freshman year, and everything sort of maps out like this: In 2022, Taylor posted 38 receptions for 414 yards and three scores. The following year includes 36 receptions for 348 yards and one touchdown. Then he finishes with 55 catches for 546 yards and two touchdowns.
Now… there are certainly some red flags. He doesn’t bring an overwhelming amount of physicality and is more of that Big F option. There’s really not a ton of speed here. What you see is what you get there. Doesn’t really create big time separation. Also, he really wasn’t asked to do much at LSU. We’re not talking about a guy who made big splash plays down the field. He took a lot of dump-offs and check downs at LSU. It makes you wonder why he wasn’t asked to do more within the offense.
The positives include having that hands catcher ability to pluck balls out of the air. I wouldn’t call him slow and you can tell he has good pure movement skills to not get stuck in the mud. Not a goof and can actually contort himself to make plays outside his catch radius.
I have a middle round grade on Mason Taylor. 4th-5th round? I wouldn’t say he’s my favorite tight end, but I do like him and think he can be something. I just wouldn’t expect anything outrageous here. Something as in a player who can make a roster while contributing, but I wouldn’t go betting the house on him being a Hall of Famer like his dad.
