Le’Veon Bell eyeing NFL comeback with Steelers

It appears that Le’Veon Bell is once again trying to make a comeback to the NFL. The three-time Pro Bowler announced on Friday that he will start training for his comeback in March. Indicating that he would only want to play for his former team over in Pittsburgh.

“And I’m gonna be honest with myself. I got to go out there and be like, I’m going to put my foot in the ground. Do I feel it? Am I hurting? Can I go out there and really play again?” Bell said, according to ESPN. “And bro, I’m telling you all right now when I go out there and train in March, and if I hit April and I make this decision to come back to play in the NFL again, mark my words down, I will be better than I ever was.”

Bell continued by talking about his desired landing spot if he did make it back to the NFL:

“And I will only come back for that one team. You all know who it is. I don’t have to say no team. You all know who it is.”

Hint, he is talking about the Steelers here.

Especially given Bell’s expressed desire to retire as a member of the Black and Gold. To be fair his career did start and was made there. But as I think about it, it’s basically where his career ended as well.

He amassed 2,215 scrimmage yards in 2014, overall becoming one of the best/most dynamic backs in the NFL. But after already being franchise-tagged once, Bell declined to sign another one and instead sat out for the entire 2018 season.

Before eventually signing an underwhelming contract with the Jets the following off-season. Really, after that, Bell’s career was never the same. He ended up on the Chiefs, Bucs, and even the Ravens before stepping away prior to the 2021 season. Instead, trying to focus on his apparent boxing career that seemingly never took off.

He only had over 1000 yards from scrimmage one time after leaving the Steelers. That occurred during his one and only full season with the Jets. But after that, the drop-off was significant.

It became clear that the Steelers made the right choice as Bell, in typical runningback fashion, fell off a cliff after that first contract window was up.

At this point, though, the risk will almost be nonexistent. Assuming you can bring him in for the Veteran minimum or something close to that. All of this is actually assuming he is able to again get himself into NFL ready shape.

But if he can, just let him retire a Steeler. Sure, it didn’t end the way either side wanted, but it’s clear that Bell doesn’t hold any hard feelings. So I can’t imagine the organization is still out here holding a grudge. Hell maybe Le’Veon Bell is the secret weapon needed to turn Kenny Pickett into a franchise QB. It can’t hurt to try, right?
