Lindsey Horan: American Soccer Fans Are Dumb

The United States Women’s National Team came up short during the World Cup. Now they’re going to get trash-talked until they right the wrongs of the past the next go around. Captain Lindsey Horan weighed in on the American soccer fan base. She says most American soccer fans are dumb.

VIA ESPN:

“American soccer fans, most of them aren’t smart,” Horan said. “They don’t know the game. They don’t understand. [But] it’s getting better and better.

“I’m going to piss off some people, but the game is growing in the U.S. People are more and more knowledgeable, but so much of the time people take what the commentators say, right? My mom does it! My mom says, ‘Julie Foudy [a commentator and former USWNT midfielder] said you had such a good game!’ And I’m here just going, ‘I was f—ing s— today.'”

Does Horan have a point? Yes and no.

There are smart US Soccer fans. Have you seen the coverage that Jackson Fyda and Jerry Walker do here? Unfortunately, people like that are just the silent minority.

Most sports fans in general are dumb. Trust me, I know based on the comments I read every day. Plus, soccer just is never going to be the top priority in the states. It’s never going to top football. Like never.

That right there is half the battle. Horan, 29, said her experience in France made her appreciate how French people consume soccer.

“From what I’ve heard, people understand my game a little bit more, a sense of my football and the way I play,” Horan said. “It is the French culture. Everyone watches football. People know football.”

Again… she’s not wrong. But do French people have real NFL football? In France, soccer is THE sport. There in lies the problem in which she’s speaking about.
