LeBron James Would Be A Terrible Owner
LeBron James mentioned that he wants to own an NBA franchise in Las Vegas in a clip released from an episode of “The Shop.”
Is A Las Vegas Team Feasible?
Bron certainly has the capital to make such a move happen, recently becoming the first active NBA player to have a net worth of a billion dollars. It’s less clear whether or not the Association is planning on expanding anytime soon. Adam Silver tried to put a damper on expansion rumors at the NBA Finals press conference. While he noted that the “league will invariably expand;” Silver shot down the notion that enlargement is currently being discussed.
“We are not discussing that at this time,” Silver said. “As I’ve said before, at some point, this league will invariably expand, just not at this moment.”
Adam Silver, NBA Commissioner
Why? Because the NBA’s brain trust believes there would be a drop-off in the level of play if they added more teams. Silver says there would not be enough “Super talents” to support a 32-team league. This might be true of the current landscape of the NBA, but the sport is rapidly expanding and growing in popularity. As more of the world starts to play basketball, the talent base should grow.
We’ve already seen LeGM try his hand at managing a team, and that did not go very well. Would LeBron have better luck as an owner? Doubtful given his track record. He is partially responsible for the poor roster construction in Los Angeles. It’s even rumored that he wanted the Cavs to trade for Carmelo Anthony during his time there. From terrible movies to inane roster construction, LeBron has proved he isn’t capable of much beyond the court. If he does get his own team, he should sit back and not interfere, or the results could be worse than Russell Westbrook’s fit on the Lakers.
