3 PlayStation 2 era titles that need a remake

The PlayStation 2 will forever go down as one of Sony’s greatest achievements, a defining moment in gaming history.

With its release came many amazing titles and experiences, iconic entries in genre-defining franchises, and a litany of these titles deserve a remake to restore them to their former glory. Let’s take at three particular titles that should be remade ala Resident Evil 2 (2019) and Crash N’Sane Trilogy.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica should join it’s PlayStation 2 peer RE4 in being remade

Originally releasing on the Sega Dreamcast in 2000, Code Veronica was another fantastic entry that allowed Capcom to continue with their premier horror IP. It was later ported to the PlayStation 2 just one year later.

The PS2 port shifted 900,000 copies in the US market by July 2006, outselling Resident Evil 4 at the time. Following the vein of remade RE titles over the past few years, Code Veronica would make yet another excellent showcase of the RE Engine and mark the return of a fan favourite PS2 title.

Crash Bandicoot: Twinsanity

Crash Bandicoot: Twinsanity released in 2004, developed by Lego games studio Traveller’s Tales. The gameplay was somewhat lacking compared to previous entries in the Crash franchise but the visuals were exceptional considering the time for which it was released.

Seeing this game remade in the same way as the series’ N’Sane Trilogy back in 2017 would revive the memory of a charming yet unfulfilled experience of the original. Part of the beauty of the PS2 and it’s titles is the childhood nostalgia a lot of younger gamers feel as they play them, hence the bulk of PS2 games coming to today’s platforms. Perhaps a multiplayer mode with couch co-op, making use of the Crash/Dr Cortex dynamic throughout the campaign.

In any case, plenty of 2000s gamers should have Twinsanity on their wishlist of remakes, especially as Crash as a franchise is enjoying new life on PS4 and PS5 consoles.

Beyond Good & Evil

Beyond Good & Evil first released in 2003, achieving several wins and nominations in Game of the Year awarrds in the years following.

The second instalment of Ubisoft’s action and adventure IP is scheduled for release in the future, however has found itself marred by perennial delays. Could a remake satiate fans ahead of the long-awaited sequel?

A remake could potentially include easter eggs indicative of what fans may see in the sequel, like when they added Nemesis sound effects to Resident Evil 2 ahead of Resident Evil 3’s 2020 release. For the time it originates from, Beyond Good & Evil enjoyed amazing visuals, gameplay and a compelling plot. Maybe Ubisoft could revive this classic to preserve some form of hype for the sequel inhabiting development hell.
