Jonathon Brooks 2024 NFL Draft Profile
Putting aside the fact that the way he spells his name sucks, Jonathon Brooks is one of the more hyped running backs in the 2024 NFL Draft. Is the juice worth the squeeze on this one? Let’s talk about the Texas running back in this edition of the 2024 NFL Draft profile series!
Brooks has some red flags that I just want to get out of the way first. He tore his ACL in November and that ended his season prematurely. He was brutal in a bad way in the game against Kansas State which was covered in the Stock report notes. Had a disastrous fumble that almost cost Texas the game. Couldn’t lead the offense when Quinn Ewers wasn’t out there.
Also, a big time red flag that he couldn’t beat out Roschon Johnson. The smart people knew a long time ago that Johnson stinks and he’s since been buried on the depth chart with the Bears. The fact that Brooks only got 30 carries in 2022 is alarming. For the record, I view Brooks as a better player.
On the flip side, he had some big performances as well. Was dynamic in the game against Oklahoma. He’s always been a pretty efficient runner. In his one lone season as the guy, Brooks ran for 6.1 yards per carry on 187 attempts scoring ten touchdowns along the way. He also added 25 receptions for 286 yards and a score. It was good enough to make second team in the Big 12.
Brooks, a four star recruit, has a decorated high school background, which should give draft experts a bit more hope for the future. He scored 70 total touchdowns as a senior for Hallettsville. Yes, that’s a real number. The Longhorns back checks in at 6-foot, 216, and should be able to handle more of a load than he did in college. Has a lot of tread on the tires.
He has pretty good hands and can thrive in a multitude of ways. Can win inside and outside the tackles as a runner. Not really limited in terms of being asked to do things. We didn’t get to see him at the Combine, unfortunately, but Brooks is a pretty decent athlete. Not a burner but won’t look out of place at the NFL level either.
I have a 7th round grade on Jonathon Brooks. I assume he won’t be there by the time I would pick him. Brooks should be capable in a committee but I don’t think he’s special enough to use a premium pick on him. Not with the way running backs come and go now. Can’t go higher with him coming off the ACL.
