Jaylen Wright is one of the most hyped running backs heading into the 2024 NFL Draft. Is the hype warranted? That’s exactly what we’re here to talk about so I’m just going to get on with it. Here is your Jaylen Wright 2024 NFL Draft profile!
I’m sure this won’t be the last time I say this. How important is sample size to you? It’s not like we have nothing to work with here but we don’t exactly have bell cow status with Wright. Played sparingly as a freshman totalling 85 carries. Got out-carried by Jabari Small in 2022 but it was very much a revolving door. Then mostly seized the job during his final year as a junior. 2023 was by far his best season where Wright totaled 1,013 rushing yards on 137 carries sporting a ridiculous 7.4 YPC mark and four touchdowns. He also added 22 receptions for 141 yards.
The biggest thing the guy has going for him is the home run ability. Something we talked about several times during the year. You have to give him credit. Guy has a knack for creating long runs, which is extremely valuable at this position. Over 25% of his carries went for over 10 yards in 2023. That was the best mark in all of college football.
Athletically, he’s got what you want. Checks in at 5-foot-10, 210, and brings 4.38 speed to the table. Also notched a 38 on the vertical jump. 11’2″ on the broad is damn good too. Didn’t catch the ball at the Combine because of a surgical procedure but he should be capable in that area as well.
All of what I said right there is why the NFL Draft community is having a circle jerk session over this guy. I just think they’ve gone way too far with it. The negatives are there. We can’t just pretend they don’t exist. He fumbled the ball four times in 2022, which is a big reason why he never fully won the job. If the hole is there for him he can utilize his speed and jolt through it. Never going to be a guy that does it on his own. Not a broken tackle machine. Runs really upright and is definitely in the faster-than-quick category. Short area his juice is really overstated. Never going to be a bell cow starter either. Needs someone else to grind out some of the dirty yards.
I have Jaylen Wright much lower than others. Frankly, I don’t really get where the hype is coming from. I rarely do when it comes to draft politics. It’s nice to have speed at the position but outside of hitting a few home runs in college, I don’t really see it. I have a 7th round grade on Wright full well knowing he won’t be there. I’d take him as a change of pace back but that’s about it.
