Jake Haener 2023 NFL Draft Profile

Is Jake Haener the next great developmental story at the quarterback position? Maybe. The landing spot usually always has something to do with it. Nevertheless, Haener is intriguing for a bunch of different reasons. Let’s get right into the Jake Haener 2023 NFL Draft profile!

I can’t go any further without mentioning this. Nobody won the Senior Bowl more than Haener at the quarterback position. He was by far the best quarterback on the field and it wasn’t close. Haener reminds me of Josh Dobbs and has that weird arm slot. The good news is the ball is out quick and on time / target.

I wanted to get a better look at Haener during the year but he suffered an injury during the USC game. It sucks cause that would have been a good measuring stick against a bad Pac 12 defense. Speaking of the Pac-12, Haener originally committed to Washington during the 2017 cycle but just never won the job there. He did alright finding a home in the Mountain West with Fresno State. Haener was the All-Mountain West first team selection in 2022 (252-350-72.0, 2,896 yards, 20 TD, three INT in 10 starts). Not a bad season considering the ankle injury hampered his year.

Not much of a recruiting background here. Just a three-star guy who I mentioned early had to leave Washington to get meaningful playing time. Haener is also undersized (6-foot, 207). Physically reminds of a smaller poor man version of Teddy Bridgewater with an odd arm angle. You know what you’re getting but we’re also talking about someone who is accurate and gets the ball to where it needs to be. Really takes care of the football too. 53-12 TD to INT ratio is really encouraging.

I have a firm 6th round grade on Jake Haener. He’s someone that can come in and possibly hold the fort but there is still development that needs to be done here. Mostly with ball placement. Some of it just isn’t fixable because the ceiling isn’t super high.
