Georginio Wijnaldum Is Set To Join PSG In A Shocking Turn Of Events

After reportedly planning a medical in Spain to sign with FC Barcelona, Dutch Midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum appears to have hit the breaks and instead move to Paris Saint-Germain. CBS Sports and Fabrizio Romano reported that a deal with Barca has been hijacked and the soon-to-be-ex Liverpool man will instead sign a 4-year contract with the Parisians. Rumblings of the French side outbidding the Catalans have truly come to fruition, as Wijnaldum was on the verge of completing a move to Spain. Instead of bolstering their midfield, Barca will turn their attention to adding more free-agent signings to the likes of Sergio Aguero and Eric Garcia. It is likely Dutch Forward Memphis Depay will make a switch from Lyon to Barcelona after it was confirmed manager Ronald Koeman would remain in charge for the upcoming season. However, the Catalans’ top priority remains convincing Lionel Messi to stay, as no deal is in place and the Argentine is still heading towards becoming a free agent.

Geroginio Wijnaldum is a big coup for PSG. He provides experience and quality in central midfield as a former Premier League and Champions League winner. Depth is never a bad thing, and adding the Dutchman to other names such as Marco Veratti, Julian Draxler, Danilo Periera, and Leandro Parades will certainly help with manager Mauricio Pochettino’s pursuit of a Champions League title. They can now turn their attention to more pressing issues now that Wijnaldum appears to be joining. Reports continue to circulate about a possible departure for young superstar Kylian Mbappe, with his heart possibly set on a move to Real Madrid. With Carlo Ancelotti recently returning to the Spanish capital, it remains to be seen what Los Blancos’ transfer strategy will be.

As if their relationship could not get any worse, the free-agent signing of Georginio Wijnaldum adds yet another layer to the Barcelona-PSG rivalry. Many different events come to mind, including the 6-1 comeback in the 2017 Champions League, Neymar’s transfer to France that summer, and most recently, the stunning defeat the Cules suffered at the hands of Mbappe and company in the 2021 Champions League. There will be nothing short of explosive drama if these two teams meet once again in the future.
