Dele Alli faces punishment after a coronavirus related video was leaked. The Football Association (FA) has decided to give Alli a one-game ban and a £50,000 fine. As well as Alli having to take an FA Education course.
Earlier this year, Alli made a Snapchat video that featured an Asian man. Alli captioned the post with “Corona whatttttt, please listen with volume.” The next video featured Alli wearing a mask with his facial appearance of concern. “This virus gunna have to be quicker than that to catch me,” was the caption.
The video was deleted minutes after it was posted to his private Snapchat story. However, the video has been leaked to Daily Star.
Alli released two public apologies and stated to FA that it was just a misjudged joke. None the less, FA deemed that it had racial connotations needs to enforce a punishment on the player.
A similar racial incident happened in November. Manchester City star, Bernardo Silva, also received a one-game ban and a £50,000 fine.
On Twitter, he compared his teammate Benjamin Mendy to the character on a packet of Conguitos, a chocolate candy sold in Spain and Portugal.
FA deemed that it was not a racially charged joke but still felt the need to punish Mendy for his actions.
Similarly, with Alli’s punishment, he will miss the first game of Project Restart for the Premier League. Tottenham will face Manchester United for its first game.
