Chaim Bloom Deserves Credit For Signing Masataka Yoshida
The Red Sox fired Chaim Bloom and he 100% deserved to lose his job. For as bad as he was at his job, there is one thing that Bloom absolutely deserves credit for. What’s fair is fair. Bloom nailed the Masataka Yoshida signing. Yoshida was a home run signing and I’m not sure it’s arguable.
Yoshida, 30, signed a five-year deal with Boston worth $90 million. I don’t watch Japanese baseball so I had no idea what to expect. $90 million still seemed like a lot given the fact that they couldn’t muster up the coin to pay Xander Bogaerts (fans should still be upset about the way the franchise handled that).
This move was heavily criticized. Let’s not forget that. Several media personalities spoke out against the deal. Trey was more on the wait and see approach because again, I don’t pretend that I watch Japanese baseball. The people that blasted this deal, however, owe Chaim an apology.
It doesn’t matter that the Red Sox scouted him from a Ferris wheel. It worked out and there are absolutely no regrets about this deal. His defense is suspect and should probably be a DH going forward. Still, the bat absolutely plays. Yoshida slashed .289/.338/.445 during his first year at the MLB level. I would argue that Bloom still should have given that money to a guy that actually hits homers like Kyle Schwarber, but that’s a topic for another day.
The Red Sox were never going to win big at the MLB level with Bloom in charge. He wasn’t good at his job but we have to be fair about something. He wasn’t a total disaster and the Yoshida call was gutsy but paid off. The Sox are lucky to have Yoshida.
