The discourse surrounding Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams is weird. Dude gets far too much hate online from the internet trolls and armchair football experts when those in the know recognize that Williams had a very solid season all things considered. Two head coaches, three offensive play-callers. In the midst of the chaos, Williams finished just 27 yards behind Jayden Daniels and the least amount of interceptions among rookies with six. Now, with newly hired Ben Johnson, I would venture to bet the fantasy outlook for Williams raises dramatically.
Caleb Williams finished as QB16 in his rookie season, which is more than respectable. Five top-ten finishes among the chaos and disarray in Chicago. Now with offensive maestro Ben Johnson in town, you can bet your bottom dollar his stats will increase. He made Jared Goof, I mean Jared Goff, into a fantasy darling. Turned around his entire career. Look at the stats:
We’re looking at basically similar stats from Williams and Goff, and I have a feeling we haven’t even scratched the surface of what Ben Johnson can do. He likely had to re-work his offense to adjust to what Goff can do. This Lions team has finished fifth twice and first in points with Goff at the helm of this offense. Now he has a generational talent in Williams, and he can fully unleash his offense. But, I would be remiss if I didn’t point out the obvious…
The Detroit Lions have difference makers the Chicago Bears lack. No one in Chicago comes close to Amon-Ra St-Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs, Jameson Williams, and that stout offensive line. The Bears’ offensive line is arguably the WORST in the NFL. So this won’t be a duplication of the Lions in the Windy City. However, I guarantee Johnson gets that dope Ryan Poles to actually make sound investments in the offensive line, and the rest will fall into place. This offense does have weapons, but it starts with keeping Caleb Williams upright.
The first year with a new head coach isn’t always pretty. We know that first-time head coaches do struggle, even the best of offensive minds. But If I were a betting man, which I am, I would bet that Caleb Williams finishes in the QB9-QB11 range in 2025. Dynasty owners should be over the moon with this hire, and I guarantee Williams’ ADP in drafts this fall will be much higher than people expect.
