Aston Villa Signs French Winger Moussa Diaby

Aston Villa announced the signing of French winger Moussa Diaby on Saturday. Villa paid Diaby’s former club Bayer Leverkusen a club-record €60 million ($66.8 million) transfer fee to secure his services. He has signed a five-year contract with Villa that will keep him at the club until 2028.

Diaby joined Leverkusen in 2019. In four years with the club, he made 172 appearances and scored 49 goals, including 14 last season, along with 11 assists.

Before moving to Leverkusen, Diaby played for PSG where he initially came through the academy ranks. He has also made 10 caps for France so far.

This is a great signing for Aston Villa. Diaby is a left-footed attacker who typically plays on the right wing. He likes to cut inside on his right foot to create shooting chances for himself when possible.

He is incredibly explosive and can provide both attacking creativity and goals. In each of his four Bundesliga seasons, he reached double figures in non-penalty goal involvements. This highlights just how effective he is in the attack. He can provide both goals and assists, and this will be incredibly valuable for Unai Emery’s side next season.

On top of this, Diaby is very gifted on the ball. His pace and dribbling ability allow him to blow past defenders, creating chances for his teammates and himself.

This is Aston Villa’s third big-name signing so far this summer. Villa has also added Pau Torres from Villareal and Youri Tielemans from Leicester City.

This has been an incredible transfer window for Emery’s squad ahead of a big 2023-24 season. Villa will enter the play-off round of the UEFA Conference League and will look to build on its seventh-place finish in the Premier League last year.

Adding Diaby to the squad is a huge addition for Villa. If he can continue his incredible Bundesliga form in the Premier League, then Aston Villa is going to have an incredibly lethal winger on its books.
