Manchester United announced the signing of Cameroonian goalkeeper André Onana on Thursday. United paid a fee of €50 million ($56.1 million) to secure his services from Serie A club Inter Milan. He signed a five-year contract with the club that will keep him in Manchester until 2028 with an option to extend for one more year.
United signed Onana to replace its former number 1 goalkeeper David De Gea. After spending 12 years with the club, De Gea decided not to renew his contract with the club. This left Erik Ten Hag with a spot to fill.
Luckily, he has found his replacement in André Onana. Ten Hag was Onana’s previous manager at Ajax. Together, they won three Eredivisie titles and two KNVB (Dutch) Cups. They also reached the final of the 2019 Champions League.
In total, Onana has kept 104 clean sheets in 255 club appearances for Ajax and Inter Milan. He helped Inter Milan win the Supercoppa Italiana and the Coppa Italia in 2023. Onana also helped Inter reach the 2023 Champions League final where they were defeated by Manchester City.
He is an elite shot-stopper and elite with his feet. He can pass balls and retain possession just as well as he can keep the ball out of the net. This is an incredibly useful tool for a modern goalkeeper and is sure to serve Manchester United well next season.
“To join Manchester United is an incredible honour and I have worked hard all my life to get to this moment, overcoming many obstacles along the way,” Onana said. “Walking out at Old Trafford to defend our goal and contribute to the team will be another amazing experience. This is the start of a new journey for me, with new teammates, and new ambitions to fight for.“
This is a great signing for Manchester United. Hopefully, Onana can continue his incredible form in the Premier League. He is one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and if he can play the way he has played for both Ajax and Inter Milan, then Manchester United has a really special goalkeeper in their hands.
