Are The Packers Finally Realizing They Don’t Know About Jordan Love?

The decision by the Green Bay Packers to move up and draft Jordan Love 26th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft was one that puzzled probably every single NFL fan. I could only imagine what Packers fans went through. Since then, current quarterback Aaron Rodgers has won back-to-back MVPs, becoming the first player to do so since Peyton Manning in 2008 and 2009. He would also re-sign with the team on a mega deal that keeps him tied to Green Bay through 2026. This is Rodgers’ team for as long as he wants it to be. This leaves an awkward question.

What do the Packers do with Jordan Love?

Does the organization even know what they have in Love? From the outside, it appears that they HAD to know otherwise they wouldn’t have moved up to get him. Well, recent comments made by Packers CEO Mark Murphy just don’t sit right with me. I’ll explain.

Full quote via PFT via NBCSports.com:

“I think this preseason is important for him,” Packers CEO Mark Murphy said in an interview with Tom Grossi of Packast. “We think he can be a good player, but we haven’t really seen enough. So I think this preseason will be good for him.

“He’s a talented player. I know the decision to draft him has been questioned by a number of people, but it’s such an important position in our league that investing future assets at the position. . . . They said the same thing when we drafted Aaron.”

I have a few issues with this statement. First, when you drafted Aaron while you had Brett Farve, Farve wasn’t playing at the level Rodgers was. Farve wouldn’t go on to win back-to-back MVPs either. Next, if you really do support your decision and know for a fact that Jordan Love is the future, double down on it. Don’t say you think he is going to be a good player. Tell the world you know for a fact he is going to be a game-changer. How would you feel if your boss told your colleagues “well, that Jim you know we think he might be good, but man we just haven’t seen it yet. I know it’s been a few years, but we are hoping he turns it around”. Lastly’ no one proves they are worth anything in the preseason. The preseason is a waste of time and it’s just to help get guys warmed up enough for Week 1.

This whole thing feels weird to me. I think the Green Bay Packers are finally realizing that they screwed up in drafting Jordan Love. If they would’ve drafted someone like Tee Higgins, Patrick Queen, Michael PIttman Jr., D’Andre Swift, Jonathan Taylor…well you get the idea. There were a LOT of quality players drafted after Love and had they gone with someone else, they likely would’ve had a Super Bowl parade or two by now.
