Last week, Victor Wembanyama’s security backhanded pop star Britney Spears in the face. The alleged confrontation and subsequent slap blew up on the internet. Although Wembanyama didn’t realize Spears was the one hit during the incident, he received a lot of backlash.
After a week’s silence, NBA commissioner Adam Silver has provided his remarks on the incident. Silver believes Wembanyama handled the situation “incredibly well,” according to the New York Post.
“I think the media has covered him in an intense way, but that’s part of being in the NBA and certainly comes with being the No. 1 pick,” Silver told The Post.
“At 7-foot-4, he’s going to get attention no matter what he does and no matter where he is, and I think he’s handling it incredibly well,” Silver said.
As Silver said, Wembanyama will receive attention no matter what the 19-year-old does, whether good or bad. Although the incident dropped out of the news cycle after a few days, Wembanyama faced some backlash during his brief Summer League stint.
In the No. 1 overall pick’s debut, Hornets center Kai Jones laid down the hammer on the young Frenchman, and ESPN did him dirty. Heading to commercial break, ESPN showed the replay of the highlight with a Britney Spears song playing over it.
“Honestly, the league depends on the media coverage,” Silver said. “He’ll adjust to it as time goes on. Based on the time I’ve spent with him, I think he’s up to it.”
“I have tremendous confidence in the San Antonio Spurs and the Players Association, who also continue to work with him,” Silver added.
Although his Summer League debut may have been underwhelming, Wembanyama bounced back for a 27-point, 12-rebound outing the following game. Now, the Spurs have shut down the 7-foot-4 phenom for the rest of Summer League.
