Victor Wembanyama didn’t realize Britney Spears was slapped during incident

Victor Wembanyama’s NBA stardom is off to a hot start, including interacting with another star, a pop star that is. On Wednesday, July 5, 2023, Britney Spears approached Wembanyama and his team from behind while walking into Catch Restaurant in Las Vegas, Nev.

Spears would then be backhanded by Wembanyama’s security, but the 7-foot-5 San Antonio Spurs center didn’t realize it was the iconic pop star.

“What happened last night, is, I saw the news obviously, I woke up to a couple phone calls — something did happen when I was walking with some security from the team to the restaurant. We were in the hall. There was a lot of people,” Wembanyama said told reporters Thursday at NBA Summer League in Vegas.

“There was one person who was calling me, but security told me I couldn’t stop because it would have made a crowd. That person grabbed me from behind. I didn’t see what happened because I was walking straight and didn’t stop, and that person grabbed me from behind, so I just let security push her away. I don’t know with how much force, though.

“Security pushed her away, and I didn’t stop to look. I kept walking and enjoyed a nice dinner.”

Wembanyama would go on to say that he didn’t realize that it was Spears until a few hours later.

“I never saw her face,” he said. “When I got back to the hotel, I didn’t forget about this, but I thought it was no big deal. And then [I was told] this was Britney Spears. At first, I was like, ‘No, you’re joking!’ But yeah, it turns out it was Britney Spears.”

After the situation cleared, Spears gathered herself after being slapped. Wembanyama’s security guard would then apologize to Spears for the situation.

“You understand how it is when you’re being swarmed by fans.”

Although it seemed like Spears accepted the apology, her Instagram story says differently.

“Traumatic experiences are not new to me and I have had my fair share of them,” she wrote. “I was not prepared for what happened to me last night, I recognized an athlete in my hotel lobby as I was heading to dinner. I later went to a restaurant at a different hotel and saw him again, I decided to approach him and congratulate him on his success. It was really loud, so I tapped him on the shoulder to get his attention. I am away of the players [sic] statement where her mentions ‘I grabbed him from behind’ but I simply tapped him on the shoulder. His security then back handed me in the face without looking back, in front of a crowd. Nearly knocking me down and causing my glasses off my face.

“I get swarmed by people all the time. In fact, that night. I was swarmed by a group of at least 20 fans. My security team didn’t hit any of them.”

As of right now, no further update on the situation has unfolded. Spears and Wembanyama have made no further comments on the backhanding.

Safe to say, you could call Wembanyama’s security guard a “Womanizer.”
