Carson Wentz and the Philadelphia Eagles have agreed to a 4-year contract extension. We have breaking news! I guess I should phrase that as news we probably saw coming. After Nick Foles was let go and signed by Jacksonville this offseason, the reigns were handed back to Carson Wentz. Now Wentz has a shiny new contract to go along with his starting job back.
Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report the news:
Wentz, 26, will be locked up through the 2024 season. The money details have also been released. Eagles are committing four-years and $128 million to Wentz which includes guarantees over $107 million. The total value of the contract now six years for $154 million. This is a no brainer decision. The only reason to be slightly considered is the injury history. Wentz has now missed the latter stages of the 2017 and 2018 season. There’s no questioning the ability.
Since the 2017 season, only Patrick Mahomes has a higher passer rating on 3rd and 4th down. Since that time, he also has 53 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. That’s pretty damn good. That’s also interesting given the Andy Reid coaching tree. Wentz is 23-17 as a starter in his Eagles career thus far. Only Donovan McNabb has more in a quarterback’s first three years in an Eagles uniform. It’s safe to say that Wentz has already established himself as the most talented quarterback to ever put on an Eagles uniform.
This was a smart move by Howie Roseman. The longer you wait on these extensions, the more expensive they become. Wentz deserved a mega-extension as one of the best quarterbacks in the league. The Philadelphia Eagles continue to be one of the best-run organizations in the NFL.
