2021 NFL Week Seven: Biggest Storylines and Takeaways

2021 NFL Week Seven is in the books. It was kind of a boring slate with a lot of blowouts. The Bengals stomp the Ravens, Dan Campbell is coaching his heart out and the 49ers have a serious problem. Check out other storylines from week seven down below!

2021 NFL Week Seven- Joe Burrow and Bengals At The Top Of The AFC

The Bengals got their biggest win under Zach Taylor on Sunday as they went on the road to Baltimore and thumped the Ravens. Joe Burrow continues to prove why he was the first overall pick in 2020 and Ja’marr Chase is making a lot of people look stupid after some preseason woes. Cincinnati is 5-2 and the number one seed in the AFC, we all knew their offense has a ton of potential to be special but I have been very impressed with their defense. They caught some flack for the Trey Hendrickson signing but he has come in and provided a consistent pass rush with 6.5 sacks and 13 tackles.

This Bengals team is why the NFL is king. If you said before the season that the Bengals would be the #1 seed in the AFC with a 5-2 record, people would look at you like you have six heads. This team is quickly becoming one of the most fun watches in the league and hopefully, they continue this success.

2021 NFL Week Seven- Jon Gruden Resigning Was The Best Thing For The Raiders

Two weeks without Jon Gruden, two wins for the Raiders. I did not have high hopes for the Raiders coming into the season but after seven weeks they have surprised me and many others. After the Gruden situation went down, I thought this team was going to unravel and how could you blame him. Two weeks removed from Gruden and the Raiders are playing a free and loose style of football under Coach Bisaccia. It feels like this big weight has been lifted on the whole team’s shoulders and now they can just play without Gruden chewing them out for every little thing. That was evident in Josh Jacobs’s comments on how the sideline demeanor has changed without Gruden there.

“Man, the sideline … it was like [there was no] anxiety. It was weird. It was like everybody was calm. You didn’t have somebody cussing at you, or going crazy at the refs. None of that.

2021 NFL Week Seven- Dan Campbell’s Lions Pulled Out All The Tricks

Dan Campbell is coaching like his team is 0-7. The Lions came out swinging recovering an onside kick after their opening touchdown, only for them to convert a fake punt on the same drive. Campbell and the Lions would convert another fake punt but unfortunately, the special teams’ heroics were not enough to beat Stafford and the Rams.

Dan Campbell’s opening press conference turned some heads when he said that his team was going to bite the opponent’s knee caps off. I feel like people gave him a bad rap saying he was a meathead that did not know football but Sean Payton does not make you his assistant coach if you don’t know what you’re doing. Outside of the Bengals game, the Lions are in every game until the end and they play tough despite their record. Sunday was no different as the Lions fought until the end only to be edged out by the Rams. I said at the beginning of the year everyone should be rooting for the Lions, fast forward to week seven if you are not a semi-Lions fan you don’t have a heart.

2021 NFL Week Seven- What Is Going On In San Francisco?

The 49ers have lost four straight games after starting 2-0. Kyle Shanahan and the entire offense look bad and uncoordinated and somehow Jimmy Garoppolo went from an underrated quarterback to a bottom-five QB in a couple of months. What has surprised me, even more, is the lack of trust Shanahan and the 49ers have in Garoppolo, I mean the guy has been on the team for several years. Oh, and what the hell is going on with Brandon Aiyuk? Not sure how a guy goes from 60 receptions his rookie season to only nine through seven weeks of his second year. The whole team looks off and for a team that had playoff aspirations, the season seems just about over.

As soon as Trey Lance is healthy enough to play I am going with the rookie. At this point in his career, Jimmy is a below-average quarterback who makes some poor decisions. Lance only played 19 college games so why not throw the kid into the game when your team has no expectations. Come next season you can move on from Jimmy and hit the ground running with Lance.

2021 NFL Week Seven- Broncos Made A Mistake Not Drafting A QB

I said when Vic Fangio named Teddy Bridgewater the starter over Drew Lock, he was making a mistake. For the first three weeks, I was ready to admit I was wrong as Teddy and the Broncos started 3-0. Fast forward to week seven, the Broncos just lost their fourth straight game to Case Keenum and the injury-riddled Browns. Denver had the 9th pick in the draft and elected to draft Patrick Surtain, I like the player but I didn’t like the pick. The Broncos had an opportunity to draft Justin Fields or Mac Jones but instead, they rolled the dice with Teddy B and they are now facing the consequences.

After starting hot, Denver’s chances of going to the playoffs are slowly fading. Their division is no joke either as the Raiders don’t look to be slowing down, Chargers have a stud QB and despite the Chiefs’ defensive woes, they are still the Kanas City Chiefs. If I am the Broncos I am calling the Texans and entering myself in the Deshaun Watson sweepstake.

2021 NFL Week Seven- Titans Embarrass Chiefs

The Titans may have had the most surprising win of the weekend as they blitzed the Chiefs running away with that game. The final score was 27-3 but it felt like every time the Titans had the ball they scored points. The Chiefs’ defensive woes are the first to blame but can we talk about Patrick Mahomes. After winning that 2019 Super Bowl, Mahomes was rightfully dubbed the best quarterback in the league and has received consistent praise. But the media has put him on an untouchable pedestal, free of critique when in reality he is not playing good football. Mahomes is second in the league in picks and has looked uncomfortable. This is the first time we have seen Mahomes have to press and force the issue in the regular season and he has not been as dominant as we’ve known him to be.

On the other side, the Titans might have the best two wins in the entire league with victories over Buffalo and their most recent stomping of the Chiefs. The win this past Sunday was impressive because they scored 27 points with Derrick Henry only rushing for 86 yards and held a top-ten scoring offense to three points.

Check out week six here and come back for week eight!
