Why Everyone Should Be Rooting For The Detroit Lions In 2021

The Detroit Lions have long been a laughingstock in the NFL and now that the Browns have found success, the Lions are easily the worst franchise in the league. Detroit never seems to get the coach right, the team’s players retire early, and the organization has not won a playoff game since January 5, 1992, but 2021 is coming up all Lions. They hired the electric Dan Campbell, landed Penei Sewell in the draft, and overall, GM Brad Holmes seems to know what he is doing.

No matter your NFL team, cheer for the Lions in 2021. I am rooting for Campbell; he lives and breathes football and gives us an all-time quote every other day. How can anyone not root for a guy who brought up biting kneecaps off in their opening press conference? You need to see the video to feel Campbell’s energy and seriousness.

A good coach can be franchise-altering, but the players are going to be the reason a team wins or loses games. The Lions landed the best offensive lineman in the 2021 NFL draft in Sewell, but the reaction of the draft room was even better. General manager Brad Holmes is slamming his hands on the desk and everyone is hugging and screaming over an offensive lineman. In Sewell’s introductory press conference in Detroit, the rookie had this to say,

“I can’t wait to put the helmet on, the pads on and run through somebody.”

Fellow Lions rookie Levi Onwuzurike became a fan favorite after delivering one of the most “football guy” quotes of all time.

This Lions rookie class might be the greatest team of all time when it comes to quotes. With Sewell talking about running through somebody, Onwuzurike wants to make people feel like shit, and Amon-Ra St. Brown is already gunning for his teammates’ jobs. The fourth-round wide receiver talked about how fueled he is to be successful after falling in the draft.

“I’m never going to forget the 15 receivers that went before me in the draft. That’s kind of the chip I have on my shoulder coming into everything I do…I’m excited to be here, I’m excited to work, and I’m ready to take someone’s job.”

Now, it is unlikely that the Lions will be good this season. They downgraded at quarterback by trading Matthew Stafford for Jared Goff and other than TJ Hockensen, Goff will not have many targets. I have questions about the defense and Campbell’s coaching ability, but the guy is dedicated to winning and wants to turn the franchise around. They may not win many games this year but I have never been more exciting to watch a Detroit Lions team.
