People love hyping up Juan Soto. There’s no denying that he’s an amazing player who is perhaps one of the 10-best hitters in the league. He gets a ton of attention with some even saying that he’s the best in baseball. There is someone better, however, and that’s Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez.
Baseball fans need to give credit where credit is due. It’s easy to hate on the Astros, yet they have immense talent. During his time in the Majors, Alvarez has done nothing but raked and I predict he’s well on his way to an MVP award in the near future.
In the 2022 regular season, Alvarez slashed .306/.406/.613 with 37 home runs and a 6.8 WAR. I can see him being top-three in American League MVP voting yet will finish behind Shohei Ohtani and Aaron Judge. Any other season he wins it.
Soto on the other hand has had a dismal season by his standards. Even though he got on base, which is expected, he only batted .242 combined with San Diego and Washington. His WAR came out to 5.6, which indeed is very good but doesn’t land him top-ten in MVP voting.
If you put together their career averages, Alvarez is slashing .296/.384/.589 with a 163 OPS+. Soto’s slash line is inflated by his impeccable eye at the plate, but still falls short. He sits at .287/.424/.526 and has an OPS+ of 157. Alvarez also averages 43 homers a season, while Soto averages 33.
Okay, these guys are both great players, but in terms of scariness, Alvarez is absolutely terrifying. The real difference maker for me is postseason statistics, and Alvarez is miles ahead of Soto.
Alvarez has an epic slash of .292/.399/.517 with five home runs in 36 career postseason games. Soto, meanwhile, is slashing a modest .271/.361/.482 in 22 postseason games. Yordan is very scary in clutch situations, especially after crushing a 3-run walk-off home run against the Mariners a few days ago.
The point here is that Yordan Alvarez is an incredible player and so is Juan Soto. You cannot, however, fail to mention Alvarez if you’re claiming that Soto is one of the best players in baseball. It’s just not fair. It’s time this fact is realized.
