Jordan Poole, Warriors agree to four-year extension

Guard Jordan Poole and the Golden State Warriors have agreed to a four-year, $140 million extension, his agents Drew Morrison and Austin Brown of CAA Sports told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski Saturday.

This deal comes with less than 72 hours before the final day that a 2019 first-round pick could be eligible to earn an extension, which was Monday at 6 p.m. ET.

The 23-year-old guard emerged as one of the league’s top young guards last season, averaging 18.5 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists on 44.8 percent shooting, including 36.4 percent from 3-point range and an NBA-best 92.5 percent from the free-throw line.

The official terms of the deal — which kicks in at the start of the 2023-24 season — have yet to be disclosed. Though Spotrac’s estimated salary figures suggest the first year of the new deal will be at $31.3 million — approximately 23.3 percent of the upcoming cap.

It’s not surprising that the reigning champion Warriors, who’s got one of the largest tax-bill in sports, will have a large portion of its money tied to its three stars — Stephen Curry ($51.9M), Klay Thompson ($43.2M) and Draymond Green ($27.6M; player option) — plus Poole next season. Factoring in the extension, Green’s player option, Donte DiVincenzo’s player option ($4.7M) plus the team options for James Wiseman ($12.1M), Jonathan Kuminga ($6.0M) and Moses Moody ($3.9M) — the Warriors could be paying over $300 million in salary plus tax for the 2023-24 season.

All that said, his extension trumps that of some of his draft colleagues, namely Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro and New York Knicks wing R.J. Barrett, who both inked four-year extensions with their respective teams this offseason.

This is a breaking news story. Stay tuned for updates.
