Will Cole Kmet Ever Become Fantasy Relevant?
Cole Kmet is basically nowhere to be found in fantasy tight end rankings. The former second round pick out of Notre Dame will enter his second year where a breakout should theoretically begin to happen. However, there’s almost no buzz on Kmet. Is that the right or wrong approach?
My personal thoughts on Cole Kmet can be summed up real quick. I was very high on Chase Claypool. Whatever the opposite of that is; that’s how I feel about Kmet. I didn’t see the buzz. I probably wouldn’t have drafted him until the fourth or fifth round. So far that looks spot on. Claypool is a star and Kmet still can’t beat out Jimmy Graham. For some god unknown reason, Kmet was drafted ahead of Claypool.
Speaking of Graham, doesn’t that sort of hinder Kmet regardless of how you feel about him? It feels eerily similar to Irv Smith with the Vikings. As long as Kyle Rudolph was on the roster, Smith was never going to be fantasy relevant. In this case, Graham is a bit washed but it doesn’t really matter. You know he’s going to steal touchdowns that could easily have gone to the Notre Dame product.
If you’re in a long term fantasy league, maybe invest in Kmet. Still, you have to know there’s going to be no short term payoff with Graham on the roster. I wasn’t a believer of Kmet during the draft process either. Kmet did nothing as a rookie but most tight ends usually follow suit when they first enter the league.
I just feel like there are better fliers to take out there for the tight end position. Did you know Jared Cook plays for the Chargers now? Ditto for Gerald Everett in Seattle. Hell… Adam Trautman could become a thing as the guy in New Orleans. It’s hard to imagine the hype train on Kmet compared to how sexy some of these other tight end sleepers look.
