Hey Miami, Exactly What Is Your Plan For Hunter Long?

I didn’t get the Dolphins 2021 NFL Draft class. Not even a little bit. One draft pick they made is still bothering me months later. Hey Miami, what’s the plan here for Hunter Long? Are you just flushing that pick down the toilet or is there actually a method to the madness here? I’m going with the former.

Miami blew part of this draft. I’m a big fan of Jaylen Waddle and Jevon Holland. The rest? YUCK. The Dolphins did not have a pick in the 4th, 5th, or 6th round. They pulled the trigger on Boston College tight end Hunter Long. A player that likely won’t help them for two years minimum.

I just don’t get it. You already have Mike Gesicki on the roster. Are you telling us you don’t plan on re-signing him? That feels like a mistake. Not to mention the depth chart is already packed with options. Durham Smythe is already the blocking guy. Adam Shaheen was brought in as the big bodied flier. So what… Long is the 4th tight end on the roster as a rookie? What are you doing?

There’s also no real upside here. Long might stick in the league but his ceiling isn’t all world. You want to take a chance on a boom or bust tight end, I get it. What’s the upside here with Long? Best case he’s Anthony Fasano? Maybe? I don’t know.

The 2021 NFL Draft should be characterized as average from a Dolphins perspective. Pulling the trigger on Hunter Long in the third round when you have no later picks will continue to boggle my mind. It’s one of those things that becomes the difference in winning and losing a division.
