Why Is Nobody Talking About Matthew Stafford?

I don’t think the Lions will draft a quarterback… but what if they do? Why is nobody talking about Matthew Stafford? He’s the one guy that can swing playoff games for a contender. (Leon Halip/Getty Images)

The 2020 NFL Draft starts at number 3. The Bengals will go Joe Burrow at 1. The Redskins will go Chase Young at 2. Do the Lions pull the trigger on a quarterback at 3? I don’t think they will. Matt Patricia and Bob Quinn are on the hot seat. They have to win right now. Selling a ready to win now team to the Ford family is the only thing that saves their jobs. I don’t think they will pick a quarterback… but what if they do? What if Matthew Stafford is actually available? Why is nobody talking about Matthew Stafford?

No quarterback has been more unfairly criticized than Matthew Stafford. Since 1957, Detroit has 1 playoff win. They are Cincinnati, Cleveland, and Washington. A poorly run dysfunctional mess. Put prime Tom Brady in Detroit, and they don’t win a playoff game. Nobody overcomes the Lions. Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson are their two best players in franchise history. Both of them retired early because they were miserable.

The Lions team stinks. Detroit finished the season 3-12-1. When you dig a little further, you realize that the Lions were actually 0-8 without Stafford. With the former Georgia quarterback, they were really competitive. The Lions had Green Bay and Kansas City beat early in the season. They also had a pretty shocking win over Philadelphia too. That’s Matthew Stafford.

Criticizing Stafford for the Lions struggles is lazy and ignorant. Especially the 2019 Lions who couldn’t beat a doorknob without him. If you did your homework, then you know that Stafford was nothing short of brilliant last year when he played. 312.4 yards per game, 19 TD, 5 INT, 64.3 percent in 8 games. He threw 5 fewer touchdowns than Tom Brady in half the number of games with the Lions roster. He threw 7 fewer touchdowns than Aaron Rodgers in half the number of games with a higher completion percentage and better yard per attempt average.

Out of all of the available quarterbacks that could hit the market, Matthew Stafford is the one guy who can actually be a difference maker. Put Stafford on the Patriots and now we’re talking Super Bowls. Stafford is the type of guy that swings playoff games and championships. This is a bonafide franchise quarterback. Stafford is better than anybody else that is possibly available and nobody is talking about him. I don’t think the Lions will draft a quarterback… but what if they do?
