ESPN is really shaking up their basketball coverage. Mike Breen is going to have two new co-hosts. One departed member of the crew, Jeff Van Gundy, was fired during the June 30th ESPN Layoffs. On the surface, it didn’t really make sense to can Van Gundy given the fact that he was actually really good at his job. You may not agree with everything Van Gundy says, but he keeps it real, knows the game, and tells you how he actually feels. That’s all you can ask for from a broadcaster.
It turns out that we now have an answer as to why ESPN axed Van Gundy. The answer is comical.
Are you sitting down?
Are you sure?
Please go grab a chair.
Okay, let’s do this.
It turns out that ESPN fired Van Gundy because they were scared he would leave them…
“While Van Gundy was one of the best game analysts in sports, top ESPN executives were wary of his desire to coach again,” Marchand wrote.
WTF?
Yes, there have been rumors of Van Gundy wanting to return to coaching. Those rumors only flourished after Van Gundy was fired. Van Gundy is also 61 and hasn’t gotten a job yet on an NBA sideline after being fired.
ESPN made the finishing touches on their broadcast team today. Mark Jackson joined Van Gundy in the unemployment line. Doc Rivers has been hired. Doris Burke gets a promotion. Mike Breen stays the same. That’s all there is to report. Other than the third grade cheese that ESPN pulled with Van Gundy.
You can’t break up with me because I’m breaking up with you!
Really sad ESPN.
