Jeff Van Gundy Exploring A Return To Coaching After ESPN Exit

What is Jeff Van Gundy going to do after he was laid off from ESPN? It sounds like a return to coaching just might be in the cards. I’m sure Mark Jackson won’t be jealous at all!

Garrett’s favorite reporter Chris Mannix at Sports Illustrated had the following in his latest column:

“Jeff Van Gundy, a cost-cutting casualty at ESPN last week, has been actively exploring a return to coaching, sources tell Sports Illustrated. Van Gundy, who last coached in the NBA in 2007, has been discussing assistant coaching jobs with several teams. Dallas and Boston discussed roles with Van Gundy before beefing up their coaching staffs. There’s some mutual interest in Washington, where the Wizards have room on Wes Unseld Jr.’s staff. Van Gundy, who won 57.5% of his games as a head coach in New York and Houston, won 52 games in his last season with the Rockets.”

Quick side note as to why Garrett loves Mannix:

I still think the Van Gundy broadcast with Stan and Jeff on TNT would be a killer. I have no inside knowledge on if TNT is looking into that, but they should be. I have no idea why one would want to be an assistant for the tanking Wizards but a side role with Boston or Dallas does sound intriguing. Well, I guess that depends on if you can handle Kyrie or not.

Van Gundy, 61, has been in broadcasting since leaving the Rockets in 2006-07. Van Gundy could also choose to go out on his own and dive into the podcasting realm. Who knows what’s next but it certainly sounds like we may get Van Gundy back on the bench as a coach this year for someone.
