Doris Burke set to join ESPN’s No.1 Broadcast Team
With both Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson now gone, ESPN has some spots to fill, specifically two spots within their No.1 broadcasting crew headed by Mike Breen. A void that apparently will partly be filled by none other than Doris Burke.
This would make her the first woman to ever call a men’s championship game on television. Not just for the NBA but all major men’s sports. Pretty impressive if you ask me. But Burke is no stranger to making history, being the first woman to call the NBA Finals over the radio back in 2020.
Burke has a resume that speaks for itself, having covered the NBA for ESPN since 1991 and serving as a national NBA game analyst since 2017. We’ve all become accustomed to her voice and it’s clear she understands the game of basketball.
Doc Rivers is expected to join her in the replacement of Jackson and Van Gundy. A rumor that had been flying around for the past few months or so.
While I don’t love the addition of Rivers and his grading voice, I think Burke will be a solid replacement. Of course, there will be the critics who say this move is solely to appear as woke. Maybe that’s true, maybe it isn’t, but what I do know is Doris Burke has an extensive career within the world of the NBA and certainly deserves a shot at this job.
ESPN is still a sinking ship and this will do far from save it. At least Doris Burke can say she not only survived the ESPN layoffs but got promoted instead.
It will be interesting to see if these three gave the same chemistry the former trio had. Van Gundy and Jackson paired perfectly with each other and I’m not sure Burke and Rivers will be able to recreate that. Mike Breen will still be amazing but I’m hoping the new kids on the block can still hold their own.
