The Golden State Warriors will need to make a move before the deadline if they want to be a playoff contender this year. They are currently the 11th seed, which would be one game out of the NBA Play-In Tournament. However, they are tied record-wise with the Sacramento Kings, who are the ten seed, and the Kings have opened trade talks for De’Aaron Fox.
It is no secret that the Warriors are looking to make a big move. Golden State has already made a move a few weeks ago by acquiring guard Dennis Schroder from the Brooklyn Nets. Unfortunately, the NBA Trade Deadline will close on February 6th so the Warriors are running out of time. However, Steph Curry said he doesn’t think the front office should rush a trade if it will ruin the Warriors’ future.
Nevertheless, there are some big names on the market like Zach Lavine, Jimmy Butler, and Cameron Johnson. However, it seems the Warriors have their preferred trade target according to Anthony Slater and Marcus Thompson of the Athletic.
“After pulse-taking conversations with multiple players, it seems Zach LaVine might pique more interest [than Butler], depending on [LaVine’s] cost. … There is some level of understanding and alignment from all levels of the Warriors organization that they lack a true second scorer next to Curry, and LaVine’s explosive three-level scoring would fill the roster’s largest void.” – The Athletic
Zach Lavine is averaging 24 points, 4.5 assists and 4.8 rebounds this season. He would immediately be the second go-to scorer if he were to be traded to the Warriors. The 29-year-old guard/forward has some injury concerns but his elite efficient scoring this year would be a huge boost to Golden State. It seems like Lavine is the better option over Jimmy Butler because Butler is much older and currently causing havoc in Miami with his constant suspensions.
It will be interesting to if the Warriors can make one of these splash moves before the deadline. Golden State has made it clear that Curry and Jonathan Kuminga are the only players completely off the table. Now, role players like Brandon Poziemski, Moses Moody, Buddy Hield, and Kyle Anderson could all be part of a trade. Also, more core players like Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins I’d expect to be less likely to be traded. Ultimately, Zach Lavine would be a huge acquisition for the Warriors it will be interesting to see if Golden State can get a deal done before the deadline.
